Devotion to the Virgin of the Assumption in the Irno Valley, featuring popular rosaries, holy masses, and a procession
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Assumption Feast is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Pellezzano, a town in the Irno Valley in the province of Salerno, Campania. It is organized by the San Clemente I Papa e Martire Parish, which invites the community in the days leading up to and including August 15th to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed into Heaven in body and soul by the merits of her Son.
This is not a large-scale tourist event; it is a local village feast, built by the parish and the faithful, where the religious dimension remains the guiding thread and popular participation does the rest. Precisely for this reason, it retains an authenticity that is not so easy to find along the nearby Salerno coast during Ferragosto.
The focal point of the feast is the Assumption Chapel, located on Via E. A. Mario, a street named after the famous poet and musician linked to the Pellezzano area. This is where the festivities are concentrated and where, by tradition, the procession begins.
The parish church of San Clemente, documented since the 12th century and established as a parish as early as the 16th century, remains the community's stable reference point. The parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno and is led by Father Luigi Savino, who signs the invitation to the faithful each year.
The program varies from year to year, but some elements are recurring features of recent editions:
The detailed program is released annually by the parish via a poster published on the parish website and social media channels: those wishing to know the updated times and route can refer directly to the official flyer.
Pellezzano has just under eleven thousand inhabitants and consists of the main town and the hamlets of Capezzano, Capriglia, Cologna, and Coperchia, situated on the slopes of the valley at an altitude of about 250 meters. The local religious calendar is particularly rich: Saint Anne, the co-patron, is celebrated on July 26th with a historic procession; Saint Clement I Pope is celebrated on November 23rd; in Capriglia, the Madonna delle Grazie has her feast on the first Sunday of July. The Assumption Feast fits into this tapestry of events and represents its summer chapter.
During the same period, the town experiences its most lively week: the traditional Sagra do' Sciusciello is held in Piazza Di Vittorio, dedicated to the ancient bread baked in a wood-fired oven and seasoned with lard and pepper. Its name comes from o' sciùscio, the puff of air that inflates the dough during baking. These are two distinct events with different organizers, but together they perfectly capture the essence of the Pellezzano Ferragosto: community faith on one side, and popular conviviality and cuisine on the other.
Visitors from outside will find a town-sized feast where it is easy to connect with the locals. The evening is the best time: as the heat fades, the chapel fills up, the streets come alive, and the passing procession draws entire families to their balconies and doorsteps. It is a discreet but precious opportunity to experience the Irno Valley away from the more beaten paths of the Amalfi Coast.
The San Clemente I Papa e Martire Parish announced the festivities in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary Assumed into Heaven by publishing the general poster on its website on July 16, 2026. As every year, the heart of the feast is the Assumption Chapel on Via E. A. Mario, in the municipality of Pellezzano, in the province of Salerno.
The complete program is distributed exclusively via flyer: to know the times of the holy masses, the popular rosary, and the procession, it is advisable to consult the parish website and the parish Facebook page directly, or write to [email protected].
