Two days of memory, tradition, and identity in Salaparuta
In Salaparuta, a small town in the province of Trapani overlooking the Belìce Valley, bread is more than just food: it is a ritual gesture, a votive offering, and an expression of ancient faith. The Art of Votive Breads festival was created to honor this legacy, focusing on the famous votive breads and the Altars of Saint Joseph, some of the most fascinating and profound identity traditions in Sicily. Promoted by the Municipality of Salaparuta, the event positions the village as a destination for high-quality experiential tourism, blending spirituality, craftsmanship, and hospitality.
Sicilian votive breads are hand-molded and decorated with extraordinary skill before being displayed, consumed, or donated: each shape tells a story of places, devotions, and the history of an entire community. In Salaparuta, this knowledge is primarily preserved by the local women, who demonstrate the techniques of shaping and decorating during the festival, particularly those related to votive bread and the squartucciato. It is a craft passed down from hand to hand, which the festival aims to save from oblivion by entrusting it to the younger generations.
The program weaves together educational and social moments. It ranges from workshops and live demonstrations in the Town Hall to a conference dedicated to the spiritual and anthropological significance of votive breads and the Altars of Saint Joseph, featuring scholars, clergy, and journalists. Within the spaces of the former Capuchin Convent in the old town, visitors will find a food area, a permanent installation, a photo exhibition, and tastings of Salaparuta DOC wines, culminating in a final musical performance. A journey that brings memory, taste, and landscape into dialogue.
Rebuilt after the 1968 Belìce earthquake, Salaparuta maintains a strong bond with its roots and the surrounding territory, also marked by the famous Cretto di Burri in Gibellina. Visiting the festival means traversing an authentic corner of inland Sicily, where the culture of bread becomes a key to understanding a tenacious and proud collective identity.
The 2026 edition offered two days dedicated to the tradition of votive breads and the Altars of Saint Joseph, blending education, craftsmanship, and conviviality.
