Art, culture, and tradition on the longest day of the year, amidst the megalithic stones of Salento
On the summer solstice, the Dolmen Li Scusi in Minervino di Lecce, located in the heart of Salento in the province of Lecce, becomes the stage for an event celebrating the ancient bond between humanity, light, and stone. The festival blends art, culture, spirituality, science, and music in one of the most iconic sites of Apulian megalithic heritage, transforming a prehistoric monument into a vibrant meeting space for the community and visitors alike.
The Dolmen Li Scusi stands in the countryside of Minervino di Lecce, along the Provincial Road 56 connecting the town to Uggiano La Chiesa. Discovered in 1867, it is considered the first dolmen identified in Italy. Its fame is not merely archaeological: every June 21st, at the dawn of the summer solstice, a ray of sunlight passes through a hole in the monument's large upper slab, projecting a precise circle of light onto the ground inside. This astronomical alignment, a testament to the knowledge of ancient builders, gives meaning and name to the entire event.
The program brings together diverse languages and encourages them to interact. Alongside moments of contemplation of the solar phenomenon, the festival hosts cultural experiences such as Silent Reading Parties, where participants bring a book and immerse themselves in the quiet of the megalithic site, and conferences dedicated to the roots of Salento: tarantism, pizzica, and the folk traditions that still shape the identity of this land today. There is also a focus on music, dance, and the promotion of traditional local crafts and attire.
The event has grown year after year thanks to the commitment of the Municipality of Minervino di Lecce and local associations, from the Pro Loco Minerva to municipal commissions and Salento cultural institutes. More than just a calendar of events, the Solstice Festival is an opportunity to rediscover an extraordinary place and reflect on the relationship between memory, nature, and community during one of the most evocative evenings of the Apulian summer.
In 2026, the celebration of the summer solstice in Minervino di Lecce was divided into two distinct but complementary days, both set at the Dolmen Li Scusi. The event was promoted by the Municipality of Minervino di Lecce together with the Municipal Equal Opportunities Commission, with the collaboration of the Carpitella Scientific Institute and the Arte Danza Team association, confirming the festival's vocation to weave together heritage, culture, and community.
