A free day exploring museums, Atellan masks, and the origins of theatre
Archeofestival is a travelling event that traverses Campania every winter and spring, fostering a dialogue between museums, archaeological sites, and local communities. Founded in 2023 by the Gruppo Archeologico Terramare 3000 ODV of Poggiomarino, the festival creates a calendar of Sunday stages where archaeology steps out of display cases to become a shared narrative: guided tours with officials and scholars, theatrical performances, re-enactments, school workshops, and moments of conviviality featuring local products. Every event is free and open to everyone, from families to students, and from enthusiasts to the simply curious.
Among the most iconic stops on the route is the one dedicated to the Agro Atellano, the territory of ancient Oscan Atella, now divided between the municipalities of Succivo, Sant'Arpino, Orta di Atella, and Frattaminore, in the Province of Caserta. The day centres on the National Archaeological Museum of the Agro Atellano in Succivo, on Via Roma, and then moves towards Sant'Arpino, where the Palazzo Ducale d'Aragona houses the "M. Stanzione" Pinacoteca and the Civic Museum. It is an itinerary that is short in distance but dense in history, connecting necropolises, inscriptions, ceramics, and theatrical memories of one of the oldest areas of the Campanian plain.
Established in 1991 and opened to the public in 2002, the museum in Succivo collects materials recovered from excavations throughout the Atellano district. On the ground floor, the reconstruction of a necropolis with infant burials in amphorae dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD is striking, serving as a touching testament to the funerary practices of the ancient world. The first floor features exhibits ranging from the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity, including grave goods, ceramics, coins, and building materials. It is a compact museum, ideal for an in-depth guided tour like the one offered by Archeofestival.
Atella is no ordinary archaeological site: it gives its name to the Fabulae Atellanae, the farces in the Oscan language later adopted by Latin theatre, considered the first form of comic theatre in Italy. Their stock characters — Maccus, Bucco, Pappus, Dossennus — are recognized as the direct ancestors of the masks of the Commedia dell'Arte and, indirectly, of Pulcinella himself. Exploring this legacy in the very places where it was born, alongside local scholars and enthusiasts, is what makes the Atellano stage of the festival so special.
The Agro Atellano stage also stands out for the strong participation of local associations and schools: students from the "Cirillo" Classical Lyceum of Aversa, parish groups, the Archeoclub Atella, and local social cooperatives enliven the day with readings, performances, and intercultural moments. Archeofestival does not just recount the past; it uses it as a meeting ground for different generations and backgrounds, in an area north of Naples and south of Caserta where cultural work also carries a clear civic value.
As with every stage of the festival, the day concludes with a convivial moment linked to local flavours: here, it is the casatiello atellano, the traditional savoury pastry of Campania, that seals the encounter. This is no minor detail, as it reflects the underlying philosophy of Archeofestival: heritage, community, and cuisine as parts of a single identity.
Following the launch in Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Capua, the Archeofestival 2026 reached the Atellano territory on Sunday, February 1st, the cradle of the oldest forms of Italian popular theatre. The day, built around the National Archaeological Museum of the Agro Atellano in Succivo and continuing in Sant'Arpino, featured guided tours, student performances, Archeoclub activities, and an intercultural moment with migrant mothers supported by the Terra Felix social cooperative.
The central theme of the 4th edition, «Playful spaces, sacred times», found a perfect expression here: places of play, celebration, and representation as sacred spaces of the ancient community. The afternoon in Sant'Arpino, between the "M. Stanzione" Pinacoteca of the Palazzo Ducale d'Aragona and the Civic Museum, was dedicated to the Atellan masks and the Fabulae Atellanae, precursors of the Commedia dell'Arte. As per the festival's tradition, the closing was entrusted to the tasting of the casatiello atellano.
The meeting point is the National Archaeological Museum of the Agro Atellano, Via Roma 7, Succivo (Province of Caserta, Campania). In the afternoon, activities move to Sant'Arpino, at the Palazzo Ducale Sanchez de Luna d'Aragona, home to the "M. Stanzione" Pinacoteca and the Civic Museum. The two towns are just a few minutes' drive from each other.
By car, Succivo and Sant'Arpino are easily reached from the main roads of the Agro Aversano area, which connect the region to Naples, Aversa, and Caserta. By train, the reference station is Aversa, served by regional and metropolitan lines, with bus connections to the Atellano municipalities. Street parking is available near the museums.
All Archeofestival activities are free, including visits to museums and archaeological sites, but booking is mandatory via the official website www.archeofestival.it. Information: [email protected], tel. +39 339 6704336.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking tours. A lunch break is planned at a partner restaurant: it is useful to confirm your attendance when booking. As this is a winter event, it is best to bring a jacket for moving between sites.
