Sunday mornings in May at Villa Fondi: a blend of archaeology, music, and local flavors
ArcheoAperiMusica is one of the most elegant spring festivals on the Sorrento Peninsula. Every Sunday in May, the historic Villa Fondi de Sangro in Piano di Sorrento (Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania) opens its doors for a unique morning experience that brings together archaeology, live music, and conviviality, all set against the backdrop of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
Each session follows a set rhythm, designed to guide the audience from cultural discovery to culinary pleasure:
Nestled in a park overlooking the sea, Villa Fondi de Sangro houses the Archaeological Museum of the Sorrento Peninsula, dedicated to the French archaeologist Georges Vallet. Its halls recount the ancient history of the region, from prehistoric settlements to Roman-era artifacts, providing the perfect setting for a festival that bridges heritage and music.
The artistic direction is entrusted to Maestro Paolo Scibilia, who curates a diverse program each year: from film scores to lyrical belcanto, from Paganini-style violin performances to Andalusian passion. The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Piano di Sorrento in collaboration with the Società dei Concerti di Sorrento and the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Campania (Ministry of Culture), with the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples. Guided tours are led by Lucio Esposito of the Unitre di Piano di Sorrento, with coordination by Giacomo Giuliano and museum direction by Giovanni Di Brino.
All events are free to attend until capacity is reached: it is highly recommended to arrive well before 10:30 AM, as many Sundays have already seen sell-out crowds. ArcheoAperiMusica is a sophisticated yet accessible way to enjoy a Sunday in Campania, blending culture, fine music, and local flavors.
In a region where archaeology is often synonymous with Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Villa Fondi museum offers a completely different scale: intimate, quiet, and uncrowded. The festival succeeds because it doesn't ask you to choose between a museum visit and a concert; it sequences them into a single morning, with the aperitif serving as the perfect bridge. After the toast, it is well worth spending time in the villa's park before heading down to the Marina di Cassano or continuing along the coast toward Sorrento and Vico Equense.
The festival took place over five Sundays, from May 3 to May 31, 2026, in the setting of Villa Fondi de Sangro in Piano di Sorrento. Each session combined a visit to the 'Georges Vallet' Archaeological Museum, a classical music concert, and a panoramic aperitif, with a program ranging from film scores to Italian belcanto.
The program, curated by Maestro Paolo Scibilia, alternated between very different styles: cinema and Disney soundtracks, a tribute to Niccolò Paganini with a narrator, Spanish flamenco — the first time live dance was featured in the festival's history — and a grand finale dedicated to the female figure in Italian belcanto.
The initiative was promoted by the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Entertainment of the Municipality of Piano di Sorrento in collaboration with the Società dei Concerti di Sorrento and the 'Georges Vallet' Museum, with the involvement of the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Campania and the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples; guided tours were led by Lucio Esposito of the Unitre. Admission remained free until capacity was reached, and the first Sunday immediately recorded a full house.
The sixth edition was held on every Sunday in May 2026. Each event followed the same formula: at 10:30 AM, a guided tour of the 'Georges Vallet' Archaeological Museum led by Lucio Esposito of the Unitre di Piano di Sorrento; at 11:30 AM, the concert; and at 12:30 PM, the closing aperitif on the terrace of Villa Fondi.
