The Great and Holy Week between Latin and Greek-Byzantine rites in the Arbëreshë village of the Province of Palermo
In Mezzojuso, a small town in the Sicani Mountains within the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Holy Week is one of the most intense moments of the year. Here, two liturgical traditions coexist: the Latin rite and the Greek-Byzantine rite, preserved for over five centuries by the Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian) community that settled in Sicily at the end of the 15th century following the Ottoman advance in the Balkans. The «Great and Holy Week» (Java e Madhe) has been included by the Sicilian Region among the island's major religious events.
The uniqueness of Mezzojuso lies in the presence, within the same village, of two churches and two intertwined celebratory calendars. The Latin rite is centered at the Church of the Most Holy Crucifix and the Latin Mother Church community; the Greek-Byzantine rite has its heart in the Mother Church of San Nicolò di Mira, under the spiritual guidance of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, which also administers the Arbëreshë communities of Contessa Entellina, Palazzo Adriano, and Santa Cristina Gela.
The Easter of Mezzojuso is not just a religious rite, but the ultimate expression of Arbëreshë identity: language, chants, vestments, and gestures recount an Eastern memory alive in the heart of Sicily. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to discover a village in the Sicani Mountains that has guarded a unique heritage in Western Europe for over five hundred years.
The 2026 edition of the Arbëreshë Easter of Mezzojuso took place throughout Holy Week, from the blessing of the palms to the solemn Easter of Resurrection on April 5th. The community renewed the dual liturgical tradition: on Holy Thursday, the Latin-rite procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, with the confraternities and the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows, accompanied by flares in the square of the Mother Church; on Good Friday, the exit of the Urn with the dead Christ from the Greek Mother Church of San Nicolò di Mira, according to the Greek-Byzantine rite. On Easter night, the chant «Cristòs Anésti» resonated, and on Sunday, the traditional red eggs, a symbol of the Resurrection, were distributed.
Palm Sunday (March 29): blessing and distribution of palms, Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom at San Nicolò di Mira.
Holy Thursday (April 2): vespers and Latin-rite procession of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Good Friday (April 3): matins of the Passion, adoration of the Cross, and procession of the Urn with the dead Christ of the Greek-Byzantine rite.
Holy Saturday (April 4): vespers and Liturgy of Saint Basil.
Easter Sunday (April 5): singing of the «Cristòs Anésti», matins of the Resurrection, and distribution of red eggs.
Mezzojuso is located in the Province of Palermo, in the Sicani Mountains. By car from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, take the Villabate exit, then the SS121 towards Agrigento. The nearest train station is in Palermo, from where you can continue by bus to Mezzojuso.
The celebrations take place during Holy Week, according to the Easter calendar. In 2026, Easter falls on April 5th.
Admission to the services and processions is free. Modest clothing suitable for places of worship is recommended. The most evocative moments are the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows on Holy Thursday and the exit of the Urn on Good Friday.
