Float parades, masquerades, and the traditional pignatta breaking in the heart of Alta Irpinia
Every year, between February and March, the Aquilonia Carnival turns Aquilonia, a small town in the Alta Irpinia area of the Avellino province, into a stage filled with color, music, and masks. It is one of the most cherished local traditions: for a few days, the streets come alive with elaborate floats, costumed groups, confetti, and streamers, as the entire community—from children to the elderly—joins in the festivities.
Like many carnivals in the villages of inland Campania, the Aquilonia event is not a manufactured tourist attraction; it is an authentic local celebration, prepared months in advance by groups who build the floats and sew the costumes. This grassroots, participatory spirit is its most defining feature, and the reason why visitors feel so warmly welcomed.
The heart of the event is the float parade, which winds through the town center accompanied by music and entertainment. The gathering traditionally begins in Piazza G. Marconi, from where the procession moves through the streets, leading up to the awards ceremony for the best floats and costumes. Each float tells a story—whether satirical, whimsical, or topical—crafted with papier-mâché, fabric, and immense artisanal creativity.
The main event takes place on Shrove Tuesday, but the program usually spans several days, including one or two Sundays, to ensure as many families and groups from neighboring towns as possible can join the fun.
The Aquilonia Carnival concludes with the breaking of the pignatta, an ancient folk game found throughout Southern Italy: a terracotta pot filled with sweets is hung up and struck by blindfolded participants until it shatters, showering everyone with treats. It is the most anticipated moment for children and serves as the symbolic end of the festivities just before the start of Lent.
The program features entertainment for all ages, including music, masked balls, and a carnival party dedicated to children, hosted in indoor venues like the Casa della Cultura or the local Social Center. The event is also a time to enjoy traditional seasonal sweets and foster the intergenerational social bonds that make this festival so special.
The Aquilonia Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco Aquilonia «Dante Castucci» with the patronage of the Municipality of Aquilonia and the collaboration of the Youth Forum. It is a collective effort involving volunteers, families, and local associations; without this network of participation, the festival could not exist, as the floats, costumes, and decorations are born entirely from the community's voluntary dedication.
The Carnival is not the only highlight of the Aquilonia calendar. The town celebrates its patron saint, San Vito Martire, in June with a rich program of religious, cultural, and musical events, and in August, it hosts the Palio delle Contrade, featuring games, traditions, and friendly rivalries between the town districts. The Casa della Cultura, a modern building that also hosts a theater season, has become the main indoor hub for the village's cultural life in recent years, which is why it fittingly hosts the grand finale of the Carnival.
The dates change every year, following the movable calendar of the Carnival. In 2026, the float parade and awards were held on Shrove Tuesday, February 17th, while the grand finale with the breaking of the pignatta took place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 3:30 PM at the Casa della Cultura. In 2025, the event was spread over three days: March 2, 4, and 9. Those wishing to attend the next edition can follow the channels of the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Aquilonia, where the program is announced in the weeks leading up to the event.
In 2026, the Aquilonia Carnival once again brought life to the center of Aquilonia, in the Avellino province, with its well-established format alternating between street parades and indoor festivities. On Shrove Tuesday, February 17th, the floats paraded through the town streets accompanied by masked groups, music, and entertainment, culminating in the awards ceremony.
The true grand finale was held a few days later: Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 3:30 PM, at the Casa della Cultura, featuring the breaking of the pignatta, the folk game that symbolically closes the Carnival and draws dozens of children every year to collect the sweets.
The event was managed by the Pro Loco Aquilonia «Dante Castucci» with the patronage of the Municipality of Aquilonia and the collaboration of the Youth Forum, in an edition that reaffirmed the communal and family-oriented nature of the festival.
Aquilonia is located in Alta Irpinia, at the eastern edge of the Avellino province in Campania. It is easily reached by car via the provincial roads connecting the area's towns; the historic center, where the parades take place, is entirely pedestrian-friendly.
The gathering of masks and floats traditionally takes place in Piazza G. Marconi, with the procession then moving through the town streets. Indoor events, such as the children's party and the breaking of the pignatta, are held at the Casa della Cultura or the Social Center.
The parades are held on public streets and are free to access; there is no ticketing. The grand finale at the Casa della Cultura is also open to everyone.
Bring a costume or at least a mask: in Aquilonia, the Carnival is meant to be experienced by participating, not just watching. Dress warmly, as temperatures in Alta Irpinia can be quite cold in February, and check the updated program on the Pro Loco Aquilonia and Municipality channels before you travel.
