Aprile Varzese, the heart of the Ossola spring

Every year, between late April and early May, the town of Varzo transforms to host Aprile Varzese, the grand patronal feast dedicated to Saint George. We are in the upper Val Divedro, in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, at the foot of the Simplon Pass and just a stone's throw from the Swiss border: a mountain region where local traditions remain vibrant and deeply felt. For twelve days, this small Piedmontese village becomes the center of social life for the entire valley, with a program that weaves together religious moments, competitions, gastronomy, and entertainment.

A festival that mobilizes the whole town

Aprile Varzese is organized by the Pro Loco Valle Divedro along with its volunteers, in collaboration with the municipal administration, the parish, numerous local associations, and the districts of Varzo. The festival's headquarters is the marquee in Piazzale Trieste, which hosts the kitchen, musical evenings, and major convivial gatherings. It is a collective event, built through the work of hundreds of people, which captures the identity of this alpine community better than anything else.

The Donkey Palio, symbol of the festival

The most anticipated moment is undoubtedly the Donkey Palio, the spectacular challenge between the districts of Varzo held on the festival's Sunday. The districts compete for the banner that the winning team has the honor of displaying on the town's Medieval Tower. The day of the Palio also features the solemn Mass and the procession of Saint George, accompanied by the marching band, associations, and competing athletes: a blend of the sacred and the popular that is the true soul of Aprile Varzese. There is also the Minipalio reserved for children, carrying on the tradition from one generation to the next.

Sport, markets, and tradition

Alongside the Palio, the calendar includes the Dvarun Trail, a non-competitive run through the valley's trails, and the "Walking with Matilde" hike. The festival concludes with the Saint George Markets, dedicated to hobbies, crafts, and gastronomy, as well as a gathering of marching bands. Collateral events include a charity raffle, tournaments, and social lunches hosted by local associations.

Varzo's cuisine

A fundamental part of Aprile Varzese is the dining experience. Under the marquee, local chefs and restaurateurs offer curated menus that highlight the valley's gastronomic tradition: Cuchela (recognized as a local De.Co. product) and Pasta Rustia alla Varzese are the signature dishes, accompanied by mountain specialties and Valais-style raclette. Eating at Aprile Varzese means tasting the authentic flavors of Ossola.
