About Appia Day

Appia Day is the national event dedicated to the Appian Way, the Regina Viarum, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2024. Bonito, a small town in the province of Avellino overlooking the Ufita Valley, also takes part in the initiative: local middle school classes join students from Mirabella Eclano and Venticano in educational activities and archaeological walks along the ancient route, between Ponte Appiano and the Aeclanum Archaeological Park.

A national initiative crossing Irpinia

Appia Day is not just a local fair or festival; it is a major collective event promoted by a network of associations dedicated to the enhancement of the Appian Way. Every autumn, it shines a spotlight on the Via Appia, the Regina Viarum commissioned by Appius Claudius Caecus in 312 BC. Since July 29, 2024, the route has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, a recognition that has provided new momentum to the territories crossed by the road, from Rome to Brindisi.

Among these territories is Irpinia, in Campania, where the Appian Way once brushed against ancient Aeclanum, a city founded by the Hirpini Samnites that later became an important Roman municipality. It is here, in the heart of the province of Avellino, that Appia Day takes on a local and widespread dimension, involving multiple municipalities and their school communities.

Bonito and the Regina Viarum

The Municipality of Bonito, with just over two thousand inhabitants at an altitude of about 490 meters in the Ufita Valley, is only a few kilometers from the Aeclanum archaeological site. Bonito does not organize its own independent event; instead, it participates in the day alongside neighboring towns, making its presence a commitment to a broader regional project.

This project was consolidated in 2026, when the Irpinian Appian Way and Aeclanum joined the Italian network of UNESCO Museums: the coordination group "Campania 2 โ€” Territories of Sannio and Irpinia" brings together six municipalitiesโ€”Ariano Irpino, Bonito, Casalbore, Mirabella Eclano, Montecalvo Irpino, and Venticanoโ€”along with the Campania Region, the Ministry of Culture, CIDAC, and the Appia Antica Archaeological Park.

What happens during Appia Day

The event format is well-established, blending archaeology, hiking, and education. Past Irpinian editions have featured:

  • Guided walks along the ancient route, starting from Ponte Appiano (the famous "Broken Bridge" of Venticano) and arriving at the Aeclanum Archaeological Park;
  • Archaeologist-led tours of the Appian Way's paved sections and the ruins of the Roman municipality;
  • Activities for schools, such as the "Discovering the Aeclanum Archaeological Park" treasure hunt for third-year middle school students from Mirabella Eclano, Bonito, and Venticano;
  • Animated readings and creative workshops for children aged 5 to 11;
  • Exhibition spaces curated by the Museo Irpino and the S. and G. Capone Library.

A heritage to be explored on foot

The strength of Appia Day lies in its method: you don't just visit an isolated monument; you walk along a road. The route between Ponte Appiano and Aeclanum takes about two hours to cover, winding through cultivated fields, badlands, and views of the Calore Valley, clearly conveying the significance of an infrastructure that for centuries connected the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides of Italy. For a town like Bonito, far from major tourist circuits, participation has value beyond the single day: it means entering a shared narrative of inland Irpinia as a gateway to the UNESCO site and offering local youth a direct connection to the heritage in their own backyard.

The 2026 edition theme

Nationally, the eleventh edition of Appia Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, 2026, with initiatives potentially extending into November. The chosen theme is "Born to Unite," and the edition is dedicated to the memory of Antonio Cederna, a journalist and environmentalist who was one of the most tenacious defenders of the Appian Way. The local Irpinian calendar, and thus the specific program involving Bonito, is usually released a few weeks prior through the channels of the municipalities, the Aeclanum Archaeological Park, and the Touring Club Italiano.

Why it is worth attending

Visitors from outside will find a free or low-cost event, family-friendly, with expert guides and none of the crowds found at major archaeological sites. Those living in Irpinia will rediscover a piece of their identity: the Regina Viarum is not just a Roman attraction; it is a road that traversed these highlands and can once again become a route to be traveled slowly, one stage at a time.

Appia Day โ€” edition 2026

The eleventh edition of Appia Day is announced nationally for Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, 2026, with the theme "Born to Unite" and a dedication to the memory of Antonio Cederna. At the time of writing, the Irpinian calendar has not yet been published: Bonito's participation, which in previous editions involved middle school classes, remains to be confirmed through official municipal and Aeclanum Archaeological Park channels.

Appia Day 2026: what we know

The association network for the enhancement of the Appian Way has scheduled the eleventh edition of Appia Day for the weekend of October 3-4, 2026, with the possibility of spreading some initiatives across other dates until November. The announced theme is "Born to Unite," a formula that summarizes the vocation of the Regina Viarum, and the edition is dedicated to the memory of Antonio Cederna.

Nationally, archaeological walks, cycling routes, guided tours, historical re-enactments, school meetings, and tastings linked to local traditions are planned.

The Irpinian side

In Irpinia, the focus of the day remains, as always, the Aeclanum archaeological area in Passo di Mirabella, along with the nearby Ponte Appiano in Venticano. The Municipality of Bonito is part of the "Campania 2 โ€” Territories of Sannio and Irpinia" coordination group established in 2026 alongside Ariano Irpino, Casalbore, Mirabella Eclano, Montecalvo Irpino, and Venticano, but the local program for the 2026 edition has not yet been released.

How to stay updated

We recommend following the channels of the Aeclanum Archaeological Park, the Sistema Irpinia of the Province of Avellino, and the Touring Club Italiano's "Paesi d'Irpinia" territory club: this is where schedules, meeting points, and booking methods have been published in previous years, usually a few weeks before the event.

Practical information — Appia Day

Getting there

Bonito can be reached by car from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Grottaminarda exit), then continuing on provincial roads. The Aeclanum Archaeological Park is located in Passo di Mirabella (Mirabella Eclano), a few kilometers from the town. The reference train station is Ariano Irpino, while the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.

Meeting points

In recent editions, the morning gathering took place at Ponte Appiano (Ponte Rotto) in Venticano, with arrival at the Aeclanum Archaeological Park, Passo di Mirabella, 83036 Mirabella Eclano (AV).

Costs and reservations

Activities in the park and school workshops are free to attend. The guided walk organized by the Touring Club Italiano's "Paesi d'Irpinia" territory club required a contribution of โ‚ฌ2.50 for members and โ‚ฌ5 for non-members in 2025, with limited spots and mandatory booking. The shuttle service between Aeclanum and Ponte Appiano is free but has limited capacity.

Tips

Hiking shoes or footwear suitable for dirt paths are recommended, along with water, a hat, and sunscreen: the route is flat but almost entirely exposed. October in Irpinia can be chilly in the morning, so dressing in layers is advisable.
