The widespread nature photography festival of the Sibillini Mountains
The Appennino Foto Festival is a widespread event dedicated to nature and landscape photography that every year enlivens the villages of the hinterland of the Province of Macerata, in the heart of the Marche region and at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains. Founded in 2019 on the initiative of the association Ph3 and its collective Photonica3 (seven photographers from Macerata), the festival has become a nationally recognized event for lovers of images, nature, and mountains.
Cessapalombo, a small Municipality in the Province of Macerata immersed in the Sibillini Mountains National Park, is one of the six centers hosting the festival along with Belforte del Chienti, Caldarola, Camporotondo di Fiastrone, Serrapetrona, and Tolentino. At just over 430 meters above sea level, surrounded by woods and trails, the village offers an ideal setting for the dialogue between photography and the Apennine landscape. Cessapalombo already played a special role in the recent history of the festival: here, in 2025, the poet and landscape expert Franco Arminio was welcomed to launch the event.
The seventh edition revolves around the theme "Regenerate. Where the journey heals", with green as the symbolic color. Artistic director Stefano Ciocchetti summarizes it thus: regenerating means rebuilding, preserving memory, and transforming wounds into opportunities. The reference is to the Franciscan Year and the journeys of rebirth that cross a territory deeply marked by the 2016 earthquake. Photography here becomes a tool for redemption and storytelling, capable of shining a spotlight on a fragile and beautiful Apennine.
The 2026 edition is divided into three phases: the opening with the retrospective exhibition "Nel segno della luce" (In the Sign of Light) by the Photonica3 collective at Forte Malatesta in Ascoli Piceno (April), the summer heart of the summer weeks between late June and early July in the six Macerata Municipalities, and an autumn session linked to the Impressum competition. For those who love nature, mountains, and great photography, the Appennino Foto Festival is a unique opportunity to discover the Sibillini with a new perspective.
The seventh edition in 2026 of the Appennino Foto Festival is divided into three phases spread throughout the year and across the six Municipalities of the Macerata area (Cessapalombo, Belforte del Chienti, Caldarola, Camporotondo di Fiastrone, Serrapetrona, Tolentino). The chosen theme, "Regenerate. Where the journey heals", links the Franciscan Year of journeys with the redemption of the Sibillini territory after the 2016 earthquake.
The festival is promoted by the association Ph3, with president Marco Gratani, artistic director Stefano Ciocchetti, and curation by Arianna Iommi. Among the new features of this edition is the establishment of a School of Nature Photography in the former monastery of Belforte del Chienti, funded as part of NextAppennino.
