The equestrian joust of the four gates in the medieval village of San Ginesio
The Palio di San Ginesio is the most important historical re-enactment in the village of Macerata, organised by the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine ASD APS. Founded in 1970, it brings back to life the medieval spirit of San Ginesio, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, perched at over 680 metres above sea level in the heart of the Marche region, between the Fiastra valley and the Sibillini Mountains. The Palio consists of two distinct equestrian competitions: the Giostra dell'Anello (Ring Joust), scheduled for July 5th, and the Giostra della Pacca, held on August 15th as part of the medieval week.
The Giostra dell'Anello is a competition of precision and skill on horseback: each knight, galloping along the track, must spear a series of suspended rings of progressively smaller size with their lance. It is a test that recalls the ancient military training of medieval knights, blending dexterity, courage, and spectacle. The joust pits the representatives of the four historic gates of San Ginesio against each other: Alvaneto, Ascarana, Offuna, and Picena, each with its own colours and banner.
Sunday, July 5th follows a tried-and-tested formula: in the morning, the selection trials take place, from which the four best knights emerge. In the afternoon, after a draw that pairs them with the four gates, the finalists compete for the Palio in the actual joust. The competition is preceded by a historical costume parade that winds through the historic centre, reinforcing the link between equestrian competition, re-enactment, and civic identity.
San Ginesio, in the province of Macerata, is famous for its intense re-enactment life. The Palio is ideally linked to the memory of the Ritorno degli Esuli (Return of the Exiles), the re-enactment that commemorates the inhabitants forced in the 15th century to take refuge in Siena and then welcomed back to their homeland, an episode that forged a historical bond between the two cities. The Giostra dell'Anello thus opens a long summer of events culminating in the medieval week of Ferragosto, making the village in the Marche a prime destination for those seeking history, landscape, and authentic popular traditions.
The 55th edition (LV) of the Palio di San Ginesio kicks off with the Giostra dell'Anello, the first equestrian competition of the season, scheduled for Sunday, July 5, 2026. In the morning, selection trials are held to determine the four best knights; in the afternoon, after a draw pairing them with the four city gates, the finalists compete for the Palio.
Among the edition's new features is a historical costume parade preceding the joust, reinforcing the link between competition and re-enactment. Roberto Parnetti confirmed as Mastro di Campo (Master of the Field). The organisation is handled by the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine.
The second Palio competition, the Giostra della Pacca, is scheduled for August 15, 2026, as part of the medieval week.
San Ginesio can be reached by car from the SS77 Val di Chienti, exit Tolentino or Sforzacosta, continuing inland. The nearest airport is Ancona-Falconara (approx. 90 km); the main railway station is Macerata.
The Palio competitions take place in the historic centre. For the detailed programme, times, and any access arrangements, it is advisable to consult the website of the Associazione Tradizioni Sanginesine and the channels of the Municipality of San Ginesio.
Arrive early to watch the historical parade and visit the village, part of the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Comfortable footwear is recommended for the cobbled streets of the centre.
