Early music resonates in the Municipal Theatre of Monteu da Po
Antiqua is one of Italy's longest-running and most prestigious festivals dedicated to early music, conceived and organized by the Accademia del Ricercare under the artistic direction of Pietro Busca. Every year, the event offers a rich calendar of concerts spread across various locations in Piedmont, with a special focus on medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque repertoires, performed according to historical practice criteria on original instruments or philological copies. The festival is supported by the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Ministry of Culture, the Piedmont Region, and foundations such as Fondazione CRT.
In the town of Monteu da Po, a hillside village in the Metropolitan City of Turin known for the Roman archaeological site of Industria, the festival finds one of its most intimate venues: the Municipal Theatre, located at Via San Giovanni 5. The cozy space and favorable acoustics provide an ideal setting for listening to early music, where the charm of the location dialogues with the sounds of Renaissance and Baroque instruments.
The concert that Antiqua brings to Monteu da Po is dedicated to instrumental music in the European courts of the Renaissance, a repertoire of dances, 'balli da sonare', and concert pieces that enlivened the festivities and receptions of the great courts of the 16th and early 17th centuries. An ensemble of specialized musicians brings to life works by composers such as Giorgio Mainerio, Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger, and Michael Praetorius, restoring the elegance and sonic color of an era.
The Antiqua concerts in Monteu da Po are free of charge, in the spirit of cultural dissemination that drives the Accademia del Ricercare. The evenings are often enriched by a small art installation curated by the "La Voce dei Venti" association, which unites music and visual arts in a dialogue between different forms of expression.
The 31st edition of the Antiqua festival, promoted by the Accademia del Ricercare, stopped in Monteu da Po on Sunday, May 17, 2026, with a free concert at the Municipal Theatre on Via San Giovanni 5, at 9:15 PM.
The focus was on instrumental music of the European Renaissance courts: a program of dances and 'balli da sonare' that spanned the works of Giorgio Mainerio, the concert pieces of Johann Hieronymus Kapsberger, and rhythms taken from the Terpsichore (1620) collection by Michael Praetorius. The evening, performed on flutes, viols, virginal, and percussion, was accompanied by an art installation curated by the «La Voce dei Venti» association, in a dialogue between sound and visual arts in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Turin.
Accademia del Ricercare — «Instrumental Music in the European Courts of the Renaissance»
A program dedicated to the dances and concert pieces that enlivened the European courts of the 16th and early 17th centuries, structured around three great authors:
The performance was entrusted to an ensemble of eight musicians playing flutes, viols, virginal, and percussion, including Luisa Busca, Manuel Staropoli, and Carlo Gomiero. The evening was enriched by a small art installation curated by the «La Voce dei Venti» association.
Monteu da Po is located in the hilly area between Chivasso and the border with the Asti region, about 35 kilometers from Turin. By car, it can be reached from the A4 motorway (Chivasso Est exit) by heading up towards the hills; the reference railway station is Chivasso, which is well-connected to the regional capital. The concerts are held in the Municipal Theatre, at Via San Giovanni 5.
Admission to the Antiqua festival concerts in Monteu da Po is free. For information and reservations: [email protected].
Events generally begin at 9:15 PM. We recommend arriving a little early, given the limited seating capacity of the theatre, to ensure a seat. It is well worth combining the evening with a visit to the nearby Roman archaeological site of Industria.
