Springtime Marian devotion in the heart of the Lecce Salento
In the municipality of Lizzanello, in the province of Lecce and in the heart of the Apulian Salento, the Annunziata Festival and Fair is one of the most heartfelt occurrences in the spring devotional calendar. Every year, around the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the community gathers around the small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Annunziata, in the district traditionally known as "Lu santu", to renew a bond of faith and identity that spans generations.
The heart of the festival is the Annunziata Chapel, a 16th-century building commissioned by the Conti Paladini, the noble family that ruled the fiefdom of Lizzanello and left a lasting mark on its history. With its simple, rectangular facade topped by a small bell gable, the chapel houses an altar with a painting depicting the Virgin Annunziata: a small treasure chest of popular devotion that, once a year, returns to the center of village life.
The religious program includes the recitation of vespers and the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the "Lu santu" district, accompanied by the notes of the "Città di Scorrano" brass band, one of the most appreciated musical ensembles in the Salento area. The procession concludes with the celebration of Holy Mass in Largo Annunziata, enriched by a song for peace performed by the catechism children. The streets of the neighborhood are dressed for the occasion with festive lights, while the evening culminates in the traditional fireworks display.
The religious dimension is joined by the civic and commercial aspect of the fair: like many Marian celebrations in Salento, the Annunziata Festival of Lizzanello preserves the memory of ancient spring fairs, moments of meeting, exchange, and sociality that enlivened the towns with stalls selling typical products, sweets, and handicrafts. Even today, the occasion is a gathering point for families and the many Lizzanello natives who return to the village for the event.
More than just a patronal feast, the Annunziata represents a moment for Lizzanello to rediscover its roots. The care of the Festival Committee, the patronage of the Municipality of Lizzanello, and the participation of the parish make this event a bridge between faith, tradition, and a sense of belonging, in one of the most characteristic locations of the Valle della Cupa, in the Salento area of the province of Lecce, in Puglia.
The 2026 Annunziata Festival in Lizzanello was celebrated at the end of March with a program that combined tradition, prayer, and popular participation, representing the first edition organized by the new Festival Committee, with delegate president Maurizio Calogiuri and the patronage of the Municipality of Lizzanello.
After the recitation of vespers, the procession passed through the streets of the "Lu santu" district accompanied by the "Città di Scorrano" brass band, concluding with Holy Mass in Largo Annunziata, celebrated by the parish priest Father Francesco Morelli and enriched by the song for peace performed by the catechism children. Festive lights illuminated the neighborhood, and the day closed with a fireworks display.
Lizzanello is located a few kilometers southeast of Lecce, easily reachable by car from the bypass of the Salento capital. The reference railway station is Lecce, served by Trenitalia, from where you can continue by local bus or car. The nearest airports are Brindisi-Salento and, further away, Bari-Palese.
The festivities are concentrated in the "Lu santu" district, around the Annunziata Chapel and in Largo Annunziata. The celebrations are free and open to the public.
The festival is held every year during the period of the solemnity of the Annunciation, at the end of March.
