Historical reenactment and Risorgimento celebrations in the heart of Magentino June
On June 4, 1859, in the vicinity of Magenta (Province of Milan), the French army of Napoleon III and its Piedmontese allies defeated the Austrian forces in one of the decisive battles of the Second Italian War of Independence. That victory paved the way for the allies' entry into Milan and marked a fundamental stage of the Risorgimento. The memory of those events is so deeply rooted that the colour magenta owes its name precisely to this battle.
Every year the city commemorates the anniversary with a grand historical reenactment: over one hundred and fifty reenactors, including French groups, parade in Risorgimento uniforms with cannons and horses, recreating camps, manoeuvres, and moments of the battle. The historical parade crosses the city centre and culminates in the Risorgimento ball in Piazza Liberazione, while the Memorial Antonello Rota features a muzzle-loading firearm charging competition.
The anniversary is not an isolated event: it opens the Magentino June, the cultural programme that accompanies the entire month with exhibitions, meetings, and initiatives. Among these, the Children's June involves hundreds of students from the city's schools, passing on the historical memory of the territory to new generations.
The heart of Magenta's memory is the Battle Museum of Magenta, which offers special openings during the celebrations. Documents, uniforms, and memorabilia recount the events of 1859 and their significance in the path towards the Unification of Italy, making the visit a valuable complement to the reenactment.
In 2026, the 167th anniversary of the Battle of Magenta of June 4, 1859, is commemorated. The main celebrations take place on Sunday, June 7, the first Sunday of the month, and open the Magentino June calendar. The historical reenactment with groups in Risorgimento costumes, the parade in the city centre, and initiatives dedicated to the memory of the Risorgimento are the focus.
The complete programme is released by the Municipality of Magenta in the weeks preceding the event. Based on recent editions, the celebrations include:
