The international urban theatre festival of the Abbiatense area
Le Strade del Teatro was born in 1996 in Abbiategrasso, in the Metropolitan City of Milan, as part of the 'Metropรฒli' project of the then Province of Milan. The idea is simple and powerful: to take theatre out of conventional venues, into the streets and squares, making it a tool for meeting and integration between citizens of different cultures. Since then, the festival has grown to become an international benchmark for urban theatre.
Each edition features around forty shows spanning various street art forms:
The event, with Abbiategrasso as the main hub, extends to eleven municipalities in the Abbiatense and Magentino areas: Albairate, Boffalora sopra Ticino, Cassinetta di Lugagnano, Corbetta, Cusago, Magenta, Mesero, Robecco sul Naviglio, Vermezzo, and Vittuone.
Organized by Centro Teatro dei Navigli, Le Strade del Teatro received the prestigious Premio Hystrio in 2012 for best theatre initiative. This award testifies to the quality and consistency of a project that combines artistic research, popular appeal, and territorial roots along the Lombardy canals.
The 2026 edition confirms the festival's formula, traditionally held between May and June. With Abbiategrasso as the main hub, the festival brings shows of contemporary circus, street theatre, dance, mime, and clowning to the eleven municipalities in the area. As of June 1, 2026, the precise dates have not yet been published.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including dates and shows, will be published by Centro Teatro dei Navigli. As is tradition, the festival offers around forty shows of contemporary circus, vertical dance, street theatre, mime, and clowning in the squares of Abbiategrasso and the other participating municipalities. Program coming soon.
The contemporary circus and vertical dance performances in the central squares, the heart of the urban theatre festival.
Abbiategrasso is about 22 km from Milan, reachable by train (Milan-Mortara line) and by car via the SS494. The shows take place in the streets and squares of the centre and in the other participating municipalities.
Many street theatre shows are free. For details and the schedule, consult the website of Centro Teatro dei Navigli.
