The patronal festival of Parabiago, between faith, market, and tradition
Saint Gervasius and Saint Protasius, Milanese martyrs whose bodies were found by Saint Ambrose, are the patrons of Parabiago, a town in the Alto Milanese region of the province of Milan. Their feast day falls on June 19th, a date linked to the translation of their relics to the Ambrosian basilica, and for centuries it has marked the religious and civil calendar of the city. The parish church, the spiritual heart of Parabiago, is dedicated to them.
Alongside the religious celebrations, the patronal festival has been enlivened for over ten years by the Pro Loco of Parabiago, which organizes a market in the town center with about forty stalls: artisans, hobbyists, and painters display their work along the village streets. It's an opportunity for a stroll among colors, craftsmanship, and traditions, in a festive atmosphere that involves families and visitors.
One of the most characteristic aspects is the rediscovery of traditional games for children: the 'ruota' (wheel), the 'pirla' (a type of spinning top), and other pastimes from Lombard popular culture take center stage, offering the little ones a taste of the fun of yesteryear and the older ones a trip down memory lane. A simple and authentic way to pass on the identity of the territory.
The Festival of Saints Gervasius and Protasius is much more than a liturgical observance: it is the moment when Parabiago recognizes itself in its roots, celebrates the saints who guard its history, and renews the bond between the community and its territory. For visitors to the Alto Milanese, it is an opportunity to discover a city with a long tradition and its historic center.
In 2026, the Festival of Saints Gervasius and Protasius returns to Parabiago coinciding with the patrons' feast day on June 19th and the following Sunday. Alongside the religious celebrations in the parish church dedicated to the saints, the Pro Loco organizes the usual market in the town center with about forty stalls of crafts, hobbies, and art, and offers traditional games for children, such as the 'ruota' and 'pirla'.
The detailed program will be released by the Pro Loco and the Municipality in the weeks preceding the event.
Parabiago is located in the province of Milan, in the Alto Milanese region, and is served by the train station on the Milan-Domodossola line (Trenord), as well as by the motorway network (A8) and the Sempione state roads. The festival takes place in the historic center.
The patronal festival is held around June 19th, the feast day of Saints Gervasius and Protasius, and on the closest Sunday. Free admission.
