Classic cars and motorcycles in Piazza Doria, in the shadow of Castello Doria
The Angri Vintage Car and Motorcycle Rally is one of those events that completely transforms the atmosphere of the town square for an entire morning. As the first vehicles pull into Piazza Doria in the town of Angri (Salerno province, Campania), the scene is set: the silhouette of Castello Doria in the background, the car bodies lined up in a semi-circle, and owners buffing away the last speck of dust with microfiber cloths. There is no stage or competition here; the rally thrives on conversation, open hoods, and curious onlookers asking about the year of registration.
The event is organized by the Antiche Ruote Angri association, a group of local enthusiasts who have been bringing historic cars and motorcycles to the city since 2018. The formula remains intentionally simple and familiar: morning registration, a welcome breakfast, participant gifts, a cultural visit, a buffet, and a final lunch at a restaurant. It is a way to bridge two worlds that coexist beautifully in Angri: the world of vintage engines and the town's historical heritage.
The first edition took place on May 20, 2018, when the meeting point was still in Piazza Annunziata and a procession wound through the city streets, ending with a buffet and awards. In subsequent years, the rally moved to the town's monumental heart, adopting Piazza Doria as its headquarters. After the pause imposed on public events and a gradual return, the association brought the event to its sixth edition in 2026, confirming its spring timing between May and June.
The number of editions does not tell the whole story: over the years, partners have changed, and guided tours, street performances, and prize draws have been added. What has not changed is the tone, which remains that of a local festival designed for enthusiasts but open to anyone passing through the square.
The strength of the Angri rally is the pairing of engines and monuments. Castello Doria, one of Angri's iconic landmarks, opens its doors to participants with guided tours integrated directly into the morning program; in some editions, the visit has extended to the Collegiate Church of San Giovanni, in collaboration with local cultural organizations. For many visitors, it is a rare opportunity to enter a building they are used to seeing only from the outside.
This dual nature—automotive and cultural—explains why the rally is supported by local associations, merchants, and community groups: historic cars bring crowds to the center, and the center offers participants a setting that is worth far more than a simple exhibition parking lot.
Angri is located at the entrance to the Sarno Valley, in the area of the Salerno province known as the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese: a densely populated, historically agricultural plain nestled between Mount Vesuvius, the Lattari Mountains, and the Amalfi Coast. It is a territory where neighborhood traditions and volunteer associations remain the true engine of cultural life, and vintage car rallies are a full-fledged part of this network of popular events.
For those arriving from out of town, the rally can be the starting point for a wider day trip: Pompeii is just a few kilometers away, Salerno and the Coast are easily reached, and Campania offers few contexts as convenient for combining engines, archaeology, and the sea.
The rally appeals primarily to collectors and mechanical enthusiasts, but it is designed for a broad audience: families bring their children, who ask endless questions in front of a Fiat 500 or a 1960s Vespa; photographers find a square full of details; and residents rediscover models they once drove or saw on the roads. Access to the square is free, the pace is relaxed, and everything is concentrated into a few hours, making it an easy visit even for those with limited time.
For 2026, the Antiche Ruote Angri association chose the height of spring: Sunday, May 17, with Piazza Doria as the sole venue for the event. The day was presented as an invitation to enthusiasts, families, and casual visitors, with a dual stated goal: to showcase historic engines and promote the cultural heritage of Angri.
The morning opened at 8:30 AM with registration, a welcome breakfast, and the distribution of gifts to participants. At 10:00 AM, the most anticipated cultural moment arrived: the guided tour inside Castello Doria, one of the city's iconic landmarks. From 11:00 AM, a buffet was available, while at 11:30 AM, special participation from local partners and organizations was scheduled.
At 1:00 PM, the space dedicated to thank-yous and final greetings concluded the public portion in the square. The day then ended convivially with lunch at the Maristella restaurant, for which the organizers requested reservations.
Compared to previous editions, 2026 confirmed the structure that has worked for years: a single morning, a single location, and no competition. The value lies in the quality of the vehicles on display, which come primarily from the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese and the rest of the Salerno province, and in the hospitality extended to the crews. For the public, access to the square remained free.
By car: Take the Angri exit on the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, then follow signs for the town center. On rally days, Piazza Doria is occupied by the exhibited vehicles: it is best to park on nearby streets and reach the square on foot.
By train: The Angri station is served by regional trains on the Naples-Salerno line; from the station, the historic center can be reached on foot in a few minutes.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is about 40 km away, or alternatively, the Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport.
Visiting the rally is free for the public. For owners of vintage cars and motorcycles, registration must be completed on the morning of the event in Piazza Doria. In recent editions, there has been a modest participation fee, which includes breakfast and gifts. The final lunch at the restaurant is paid and requires a reservation.
