The historic market fair of Savoca featuring crafts, local products, and music
The Ancient Fair of San Francesco is one of the most deep-rooted events in the Messina area. Its origins date back to 1840, when King Ferdinand II of Bourbon issued a Royal Decree establishing the annual market of Savoca at the request of the Municipality, coinciding with the feast of San Francesco di Paola, the patron saint of the homonymous hamlet. Since then, the fair has been passed down from generation to generation, becoming a defining event for the community of Savoca and the entire Province of Messina district in Sicily.
The event is held in the coastal hamlet of San Francesco di Paola, part of the Municipality of Savoca, along the wide public spaces of the town overlooking the Ionian Sea. Savoca is one of the most evocative villages in north-eastern Sicily: perched on the hills of the Agrò Valley, it is world-famous for being one of the sets of the film The Godfather. The fair brings life and color to the lower part of the municipal territory, which is easily accessible and rich in parking and services.
The modern edition of the fair combines the historical dimension of the market with entertainment and food and wine. Along the streets of the town, traditional market stalls and fair-market stands unfold, accompanied by a food area dedicated to local products and a section reserved for local crafts, showcasing the ancient arts and trades of the area.
During the two days of the festival, there is no shortage of entertainment: live music, dance performances, evening entertainment, and moments designed for the little ones, with children's activities organized by local associations. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Savoca together with the Municipality of Savoca and represents one of the most anticipated moments of the Savoca spring, capable of attracting visitors from the entire Ionian coast of Messina.
The Ancient Fair of San Francesco 2026 was held over the weekend of May 2 and 3 in Piazza San Francesco di Paola, in the coastal hamlet of Savoca, in the province of Messina. Organized by the Pro Loco Savoca, the event re-proposed the consolidated formula that intertwines market tradition, food and wine, and entertainment.
Sunday featured the market fair open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the opening of food and craft stands from 11:00 AM, children's entertainment in the afternoon (starting at 3:30 PM) curated by the Baby Birba Association, and in the evening from 8:00 PM, the "Affari Savocesi" show promoted by the Pro Loco and hosted by Cateno De Clò. Throughout the two days, there was no shortage of live music and entertainment for all ages.
