The festival of the Irpinian Baronia, blending devotion, woodland trails, and rustic flavors
The Ancient Cross Fair is the most anticipated event of the year in Carife, a small town of about 1,500 inhabitants nestled at an altitude of 740 meters in the Baronia, the eastern edge of Irpinia, in the province of Avellino and the Campania region. The event is rooted in popular devotion to the Holy Cross, celebrated on May 3rd: for generations, the people of Carife have climbed the mountain overlooking the town to reach the monumental cross standing at 870 meters, erected in 1901 following a jubilee initiative to place crosses on Italian peaks, and later rebuilt in reinforced concrete in the 1930s. Around this act of faith, a fair has formed that now spans an entire day, from early morning until late at night.
The day begins early in the morning with «Sentieri della Croce», the loop hike that has become the fair's trademark: approximately 12 kilometers of trail, with an elevation gain of about 400 meters and medium difficulty, winding through the quiet woods of the Baronia di Vico, an area of great natural value protected as a special protection zone. Departure is set for 8:30 AM from the town's Archaeological Museum; along the way, a refreshing stop is planned near the cross, with a rustic aperitif, before returning to town for lunch. Participation is free, but booking is required.
At midday, it is time for the Popular Lunch, a convivial moment where local rustic recipes are served, starting with the famous tridd al sugo. In the evening, food stalls offer other regional specialties:
The Ravece extra virgin olive oil deserves a special mention; it is an indigenous cultivar of the upper Ufita Valley and represents one of the most iconic agri-food excellences of this part of the province of Avellino.
In the afternoon, the fair stalls open along the streets of the historic center: local crafts, typical products, and market stalls bring back the atmosphere of ancient village fairs, when the May gathering was also an occasion for trade and exchange for the entire Baronia. Street performers enliven the alleys, while the Palazzo Marchesale — a historic building with an arched portal and internal courtyard, the monumental heart of Carife — hosts the day's institutional and cultural meetings, such as the conference «Roots and Flavors: where taste meets tradition», dedicated to promoting local production.
From late afternoon, the festival changes pace: the «Ritmi di Corte» aperitif with a DJ set accompanies the transition to the evening, followed by a live concert and, at midnight, the pyromusical show «Palazzo in Fiamme», where light displays, fireworks, and music transform the palace facade into the scenic backdrop of the Carife night. The finale is entrusted to a DJ set, with the square remaining lively until the early hours.
The Cross Fair is a great way to discover a corner of Campania far from mass tourism circuits. Carife houses an Archaeological Museum with artifacts from the Samnite necropolises of the 5th-3rd centuries BC found in the area, the church of San Giovanni Battista rebuilt in the 18th century, and a landscape of woods, springs, and ridges perfect for hiking. Those arriving for the fair find nature, archaeology, home-cooked food, and a genuine popular festival in a single day, organized by the Municipality of Carife with the direct involvement of associations and citizens.
For the 2026 edition, the Municipality of Carife moved the fair to Saturday, May 2, on the eve of the traditional Holy Cross commemoration on May 3, concentrating hiking, devotion, gastronomy, and entertainment into a single day.
The morning was dedicated to «Sentieri della Croce», a loop hike of about 12 kilometers starting at 8:30 AM from the Archaeological Museum, with an elevation gain of about 400 meters and medium difficulty, through the woods of the Baronia di Vico, with a stop and rustic aperitif near the cross. Upon return, the Popular Lunch offered traditional dishes, including tridd al sugo.
In the afternoon, the fair stalls opened with crafts, local products, and street performers, while the «Roots and Flavors: where taste meets tradition» conference was held at the Palazzo Marchesale, moderated by the Councilor for Culture Raffaella Maiullo, with the participation of Mayor Antonio Manzi and provincial and regional administrators, including the Regional Councilor for Agriculture Maria Carmela Serluca.
The evening was opened by «Ritmi di Corte», an aperitif with a DJ set, followed by food stalls featuring cicatielli with asparagus and bacon, wild boar stew, and caciocavallo impiccato. At 9:30 PM, the concert by La Sangria, electro-acoustic folk, preceded the pyromusical show «Palazzo in Fiamme» at midnight and the final DJ set with Doctor Uva and vocalist Toni la Braca.
Carife is located in the Baronia, about 57 km from Avellino. By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda, then take the SS90 delle Puglie towards Ariano Irpino/Vallata and provincial roads to Carife. The reference railway stations are in the Ufita Valley; however, the most convenient connection remains by car.
The fair takes place in the historic center, with its epicenter at the Palazzo Marchesale and Largo Mons. Vincenzo Salvatore. The «Sentieri della Croce» hike starts from the Archaeological Museum of Carife.
Admission to the fair is free and open to all. Participation in the hike is free, but booking is required via WhatsApp at +39 392 8069187. Food stalls and the popular lunch are paid for on a consumption basis.
For trekking, hiking shoes, water, and layered clothing are needed: the route is about 12 km with a 400-meter elevation gain. The evening at altitude can be cool even in May: it is better to bring a light jacket. Official information is published by the Municipality of Carife and the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino.
