Four weekends in March featuring blooms, tea, and tradition in the Borgo delle Camelie of Compito
The Ancient Camellias of Lucchesia Exhibition is the major spring festival dedicated to the camellia. Every year, during the first four weekends of March, it enlivens the villages of Pieve and Sant'Andrea di Compito, in the municipality of Capannori, in the province of Lucca (Tuscany). It is here, in the so-called Borgo delle Camelie (Camellia Village), that one of Italy's most important botanical treasures flourishes: around three thousand plants scattered among historic villas, gardens, and ancient camellia groves.
The heart of the event is the Camellietum Compitese, a collection housing over 1,700 specimens and more than 1,000 different cultivars. For over a decade, it has been recognized as a Garden of Excellence by the International Camellia Society, an international accolade that ranks it among the most prestigious camellia gardens in the world. During the exhibition, guided tours of the camellia grove depart every half hour, leading visitors through the blooms and revealing the history of this plant, which arrived in Lucchesia in the 19th century.
The exhibition is not just a botanical event: in its most recent editions, it has featured over 180 appointments spread across the four weekends. The program weaves together nature, culture, and tradition with:
Ample space is dedicated to traditional Lucchese food and wine: along the exhibition route, you will find refreshment points serving local cuisine and wine tastings, creating a village festival atmosphere that involves the entire Compitese community.
The event is organized by the Centro Culturale Compitese in partnership with the Municipality of Capannori and with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, in collaboration with numerous local associations and the historic Villa Reale di Marlia. Over the years, the Camellia Exhibition has become one of the most anticipated spring events in the province of Lucca and all of Tuscany, attracting botanical enthusiasts, families, and tourists from all over Italy.
The 37th edition of the Ancient Camellias of Lucchesia Exhibition confirmed the four-weekend format in March, enlivening the villages of Pieve and Sant'Andrea di Compito (Capannori) with the blooming of about three thousand camellias and a program of over 180 events. The star, as always, was the Camellietum Compitese with its 1,700+ specimens and 1,000 cultivars, open for guided tours departing every half hour.
The 2026 edition was held over the first four weekends of March: March 7-8, 14-15, 21-22, and 28-29. Each weekend offered a rich and diverse calendar, totaling over 180 events.
Along the route, refreshment points offered traditional Lucchese cuisine and local wine tastings.
Key highlights: the blooming of the Camellietum Compitese (Garden of Excellence of the International Camellia Society), Japanese and Chinese tea ceremonies, and medieval historical re-enactments. In collaboration with Villa Reale di Marlia, reduced weekday tickets were available for visitors.
The exhibition takes place in Pieve and Sant'Andrea di Compito, hamlets of the Municipality of Capannori (LU). By car from the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway, take the Capannori exit and follow signs for Compitese. During the exhibition days, the village centers are closed to traffic: parking is available at the Frantoio sociale del Compitese (via di Tiglio 609A, Pieve di Compito), where the ticket office is also located.
On weekends, the ticket includes a shuttle service connecting the parking area to the villages. A dedicated shuttle is available for those traveling with dogs.
Weekend admission: 10 euros (shuttle included); weekdays: 6 euros. All guided tours are included in the ticket price.
