A fair that celebrates horses and the mountains

Amatrice a Cavallo is the event that, every early September, brings rural life and traditions back to Torrita di Amatrice, on the Apennine plateau of the Municipality of Amatrice, in the province of Rieti, Lazio. Originally a gathering for equestrian enthusiasts, it has established itself in just a few years as one of the most popular fairs and markets in central Italy dedicated to horses and working animals, attracting breeders, riders, and visitors from across the country.

The Italian Heavy Draft Horse takes center stage

The technical heart of the fair consists of the official studbook evaluations conducted by CAITPR and ANACAITPR experts, dedicated to the Italian Heavy Draft Horse, a breed historically linked to farm work and now protected as a national zootechnical heritage. Alongside the horses, mules, donkeys, cattle, and other livestock parade throughout the days, in a gathering that has exceeded hundreds of animals in its most crowded editions.

Parades, butteri, and shows

The event alternates technical sessions with grand spectacles: carriage parades, demonstrations by butteri (traditional Italian cowboys) and riders, the evocative procession of ox-drawn wagons, and demonstrations of ancient crafts related to horses, such as farriery. There are also re-enactments of rural life, such as the transport of the 'carbonera' (charcoal) with mules and horses, and the blessing of the animals. The evenings are enlivened by folk music with accordions, tambourines, and ciaramelle, as well as shows and entertainment for all ages.

Market, gastronomy, and community

The fair enhances the ancient bond between the Apennine community, the horse, and the land, offering visitors an authentic immersion into the folk traditions of inland Lazio.
