About Potato Festival

Every October, the historic center of Leonessa—a mountain village nestled at nearly 1,000 meters in the province of Rieti—comes alive with scents, stalls, and music to celebrate its local yellow and red-fleshed potatoes. Established in 1990, the Potato Festival is now one of the most anticipated food and wine events of the autumn in the Lazio region, featuring over two hundred exhibitors from across Italy, open-air kitchens serving lunch and dinner, truffle gnocchi, rescallata, and live entertainment throughout the town streets.

A festival born around a product of excellence

The Leonessa Potato Festival takes place every October in the Municipality of Leonessa, in the province of Rieti, Lazio Region. The village, perched on a vast plateau at about 1,000 meters above sea level between the Reatini Mountains and the Umbrian border, owes much of its agricultural identity to a tuber that finds the ideal soil and climate here: the Leonessa potato, cultivated in both yellow and red-fleshed varieties and recognized as one of the traditional agri-food products of Lazio.

The event, launched in 1990 and organized by the Pro Loco of Leonessa with the support of the municipal administration, has spanned over three decades without losing its grassroots charm. The local dialect motto that has always accompanied it perfectly summarizes the spirit of the celebration: «Fritta, lessa, rescallata, un piattu co' li fiocchi, lu tartufo co' li gnocchi» (Fried, boiled, or sautéed, a dish with flair, truffle with gnocchi).

What to eat

The heart of the festival lies in the kitchens set up in the historic center, where volunteers prepare dishes from the traditional cuisine of the central Apennines. Among the highlights served every year:

  • Potato gnocchi with truffle, the signature dish, prepared with prized truffles from the Rieti area;
  • Gnocchi with meat sauce, the most traditional alternative;
  • Rescallata, the village's most iconic recipe: boiled potatoes then pan-sautéed with onions and bacon;
  • French fries served continuously from the stalls;
  • Grilled sausages and mountain cheeses, paired with local wines.

The market and craftsmanship

Alongside the food stalls, there is a vast market exhibition of local products and handicrafts: more than two hundred exhibitors from all over Italy occupy the squares and streets of the village, with stalls dedicated to cheeses, honey, mushrooms, truffles, cured meats, preserves, and artisanal goods. It is an opportunity for many visitors to stock up on autumn provisions before winter arrives.

Music, folklore, and shows

The program goes beyond just food. Over the three days, visitors can enjoy performances by the Majorette Città di Leonessa, the Città di Leonessa Marching Band, roving folk groups, popular music concerts, and dance evenings with DJ sets. The inauguration traditionally takes place on Friday afternoon in Piazza VII Aprile, the town's porticoed living room.

The village and its surroundings

Leonessa is worth a visit even outside of the festival. Founded in the 13th century, it retains a regular urban layout, medieval porticoes, the Church of San Pietro with its Gothic portal, and the Sanctuary of San Giuseppe da Leonessa. The surrounding area features the plateau's pastures, the trails of Monte Tilia, and the slopes of the Terminillo ski area, while just a few kilometers away, the Umbria region begins with the Valnerina valley and the town of Cascia. The festival is therefore a great starting point for a weekend of nature, gastronomy, and heritage in the Lazio hinterland.

Why it's worth visiting

Compared to many smaller festivals, the Leonessa event has reached a scale that attracts thousands of visitors from Rome, Rieti, Terni, and Umbria. The center's streets are closed to traffic, the atmosphere is that of a grand village fair, and prices remain affordable, as the event is managed by volunteers. Those who arrive early on Sunday morning find the village at its best, with the market just opening and the mist rising over the plateau.

Potato Festival — edition 2026

The 36th edition of the Leonessa Potato Festival is scheduled from Friday, October 9th to Sunday, October 11th, 2026, in the historic center of the village. Three days dedicated to the Leonessa yellow and red-fleshed potato, featuring field kitchens, a market exhibition of local products and crafts, and live entertainment along the village streets.

The 36th edition

In 2026, the Leonessa Potato Festival reaches its 36th edition and takes place from Friday, October 9th to Sunday, October 11th in the historic center of the Municipality of Leonessa, in the province of Rieti. The event's structure remains the consolidated one: the large market exhibition of local products and crafts with about two hundred exhibitors from all over Italy, kitchens managed by volunteers serving truffle gnocchi, rescallata, and french fries, and a calendar of shows spread over the three days.

The festival's headquarters is, as always, Piazza VII Aprile, where the inauguration takes place on Friday afternoon; from there, the event extends to the streets and squares of the village, which are closed to traffic for the occasion.

Programme Potato Festival 2026

The detailed program for the 36th edition, including times, concerts, and appointments, has not yet been published by the organizers: it is usually released by the Pro Loco of Leonessa and the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the event. Based on the established schedule of recent editions, the festival opens on Friday afternoon with the inauguration and the opening of stalls in Piazza VII Aprile, continues on Saturday and Sunday with the market opening in the morning, food service for lunch and dinner, and musical performances in the evening. Tips

Leonessa is located at an altitude of about 1,000 meters: October evenings are cold, so it is advisable to bring warm clothing and comfortable shoes for the stone-paved streets. For overnight stays, there are farmhouses and accommodations in the village and surrounding hamlets, but it is essential to book well in advance for the festival.
