The traditional Carnival of Mistretta, featuring masks, floats, and the ancient Callivari a Cavaddu parade
The Amastratino Carnival is the most beloved festival in Mistretta, a charming village perched over 900 meters above sea level in the Nebrodi region of the province of Messina (Sicily). The name "Amastratino" derives from the town's ancient name, Amestratus, reflecting the pride of a community that transforms its historic center into a stage for color, humor, and creativity every year.
During the festivities, the streets and squares of Mistretta's center buzz with costumed groups and individual masks, showcasing original outfits, music, and choreographed performances. It is a grassroots, inclusive Carnival defined by high spirits and a desire for togetherness, drawing families, young people, and seniors into one grand village celebration.
The most distinctive and highly anticipated event is the Callivari a Cavaddu, the ancient carnival parade featuring mules and donkeys. The procession sets off from Largo Santa Sofia in the Santuzza district, winding through the town's neighborhoods until it reaches the municipal park. Along the route, traditional Amastratino folk songs echo through the air, while locals share rustic peasant dishes like boiled potatoes, eggs, and legumes. It is a moment of conviviality that preserves and passes on the territory's identity and roots to new generations.
The Amastratino Carnival program caters to all ages. Fat Thursday kicks off the festivities with a traditional children's party, complete with balloons, confetti, cotton candy, group dances, and games, alongside a masquerade Senior Party. These are followed by the Callivari a Cavaddu and the grand finale parades, social highlights that keep the village vibrant until the final days of Carnival.
The event is the result of collaboration between numerous local associations, including AVIS, Cotulevi, Ludoteca HakunaMatata, Giovani Mistretta, and the Gruppo Folk Amastra, whose dedication keeps this deeply rooted tradition alive in the municipality of Mistretta.
The 2026 edition opened during Fat Thursday with a children's party at the Gruppo Folk Amastra headquarters, decorated with balloons, confetti, cotton candy, dances, and games, as well as a masquerade Senior Party. On February 16th, the Callivari a Cavaddu took place; despite the rain, the parade with mules and donkeys traveled from Largo Santa Sofia to the municipal park, accompanied by folk songs and traditional peasant dishes.
Due to bad weather, the final parades were postponed to Saturday, February 21st, and Sunday, February 22nd, 2026. Despite the rain and fog, there was no shortage of costumed groups and individual masks, showcasing original outfits, music, and choreography in an atmosphere of humor, creativity, and strong social cohesion that brought different generations together.
The Amastratino Carnival takes place in the historic center of Mistretta (ME), Sicily, across the village's streets and squares. The Callivari a Cavaddu starts at Largo Santa Sofia in the Santuzza district and ends at the municipal park.
Mistretta is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit at Santo Stefano di Camastra or Tusa) and continuing inland along the SS117. The nearest train station is Santo Stefano di Camastra-Mistretta on the Tyrrhenian line, from which you can continue by road.
Street events and Carnival parades are free to attend. We recommend wearing clothing suitable for the winter mountain climate.
