The village Carnival of Altavilla Monferrato, featuring piñatas, masks, and fritters
The Altavilla Carnival is the most anticipated winter event in Altavilla Monferrato, a small town of just under five hundred inhabitants nestled in the hills of the Monferrato Casalese, in the Province of Alessandria and the heart of Piedmont. Far from the spectacle of the major historical carnivals, this festival preserves the most authentic spirit of a village celebration: a day of joy designed for children, families, and the entire community, where what matters isn't monumental floats, but the pleasure of gathering in the square, in costume and in good company.
The heart of the event is the square in front of the church, which transforms into a festive stage for the afternoon. It begins with the breaking of the piñatas, the traditional game that delights both young and old, followed by a costume parade and the awards for the best outfits. It is the moment when the children's imaginations run wild amidst disguises, confetti, and streamers that color the village.
In keeping with the best carnival customs, chiacchiere, fritters, and hot chocolate are distributed to everyone throughout the day: the typical sweets that have always accompanied Carnival days in Piedmont. A delicious opportunity to warm up and savor the simple, genuine flavors of village confectionery.
The Altavilla Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco Altavilla e Franchini, the association that enlivens the town's social life and carefully manages every detail of the event. Participating means discovering a lesser-known corner of Monferrato, a land of hills, vineyards, and clustered villages, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A village-scale Carnival, ideal for those seeking an authentic and family-friendly experience away from the crowds.
Altavilla Monferrato is located in the Monferrato Casalese area, about 20 km from Alessandria and 50 km from Turin. By car, it can be reached via the provincial roads connecting Casale Monferrato and Vignale Monferrato; the most convenient motorway exit is Alessandria on the A26. The reference railway station is Alessandria, from which you can continue by car or local transport.
The festival takes place in the afternoon in the square in front of the church, in the town center. Warm clothing is recommended, as it is an outdoor event in the middle of winter.
Admission and participation are free. Chiacchiere, fritters, and hot chocolate are offered to all attendees.
