Trail running on the Sonnenberg in Naturns, between the Vinschgau Valley and the Texel Group Nature Park
The Alpenplus Ötzi Trailrun is one of the most beloved mountain races in South Tyrol. It takes place in Naturns (Naturno), a municipality in the Vinschgau Valley in the province of Bolzano, starting from the central Town Hall Square (Piazza Municipio) at an altitude of about 530 meters. The event is named after Ötzi, the famous Similaun mummy discovered in the Ötztal Alps and now housed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano: a symbol that connects the local territory to the mountains and their ancient history.
The main route climbs the Sonnenberg (Monte Sole), the sunny side of Naturns, passing through isolated mountain farms, alpine pastures, and the forests of the Texel Group Nature Park (Parco Naturale Gruppo di Tessa), partly following the scenic Merano High Mountain Trail. Runners encounter the steps and the suspension bridge of the so-called "Valley of a Thousand Steps," offering breathtaking views across the entire valley.
With about 650 participants in the competitive races and hundreds of children in the Kids Run, the event is a true village festival involving volunteers, local associations, and families from Naturns. Over the years, the event has attracted top-tier athletes, helping to promote the Vinschgau Valley as a premier destination for alpine trail running. Yet, the atmosphere remains that of a genuine mountain community, complete with refreshment stations, award ceremonies in the square, and the stunning backdrop of the Texel Group.
The Alpenplus Ötzi Trailrun traditionally kicks off the South Tyrolean trail season in April, when the meadows of the Sonnenberg turn green and the apple orchards of the Vinschgau Valley are in bloom. It is the perfect opportunity to run, but also to discover Naturns, its traditional mountain farms, and the trails that connect the valley floor to the high mountains.
The sixth edition of the Alpenplus Ötzi Trailrun was held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, in Naturns, in the Vinschgau Valley. The program featured the start of the Sunny Mountain Trail (30 km, 2,100 m D+) at 9:00 AM, followed by the Skyrace Naturns (15 km, 1,150 m D+) at 10:00 AM, the Kids Run, and the Just for Fun (8 km) at 11:00 AM, with award ceremonies in the afternoon at the Town Hall Square.
The big news for 2026 was the Unterstell Vertical, a 4.2 km uphill race with 760 m of elevation gain held on Thursday, April 9, which effectively turned the event into a long weekend of trail running on the Sonnenberg.
Naturns is located in the Vinschgau Valley along the SS38 state road, about 15 km from Merano. By train, the Naturns station is served by the Merano–Malles line. By car, take the A22 motorway, exit at Bolzano Sud, and follow signs for Merano–Vinschgau.
Online registration via the raceresult system (my.raceresult.com). Fees vary by distance, with discounted rates for early bird registration (approximately €50 for the Sunny Mountain Trail, €45 for the Skyrace, €35 for the Speed Trail and Just for Fun, and €20 for the Unterstell Vertical).
Bib collection takes place on the morning of the race at the Town Hall Square. We recommend trail shoes, poles for the more challenging climbs, and clothing suitable for spring alpine weather. There are numerous accommodation options in Naturns, Merano, and the Vinschgau Valley.
