The autumn cattle drive in the Vallunga valley at Selva di Val Gardena
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Almabtrieb in Wolkenstein is the traditional autumn cattle drive festival held every September in the stunning Vallunga (known in German as Langental), a side valley opening at the foot of the Dolomites above Selva di Val Gardena (Wolkenstein in Gröden), in the province of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol. It is one of the most cherished end-of-summer events in Val Gardena, marking the return of the herds that have grazed for months on high-altitude pastures before the arrival of the cold.
The highlight is the descent of the livestock: the cows are adorned with flower crowns, colorful ribbons, small mirrors, and large bells, following a farming tradition rooted in centuries of alpine life. The cow that has spent the season without incident leads the herd at the head of the procession. A highly anticipated moment is the award ceremony for the best-decorated cow, which delights both adults and children. The cattle drive celebrates the end of the summer grazing season and serves as a gesture of gratitude from farmers for a peaceful summer spent on the high pastures.
The descent of the herds is the centerpiece of a genuine village festival. The day typically begins around 10:00 AM, with the animals expected in the valley by early afternoon. The program features South Tyrolean folk music, a rich gastronomic corner with traditional local specialties prepared according to farming customs, and numerous games and entertainment for children. The natural setting of the Vallunga, with its Dolomite walls and high-mountain meadows, makes the event an authentic experience for families, hikers, and enthusiasts of Ladin and South Tyrolean traditions.
The Vallunga Almabtrieb is part of the many autumn cattle drives that bring South Tyrol to life between mid-September and mid-October. In Selva di Val Gardena, the event attracts both residents and tourists, united in celebrating one of the most genuine rituals of the Dolomite alpine culture. Admission to the festival is free, and the event takes place outdoors, immersed in one of the most spectacular landscapes in Trentino-South Tyrol.
The date for the 2026 edition of the Almabtrieb in Wolkenstein has not yet been announced by the organizers. The cattle drive festival in the Vallunga, above Selva di Val Gardena, is traditionally held on a Sunday in September and is scheduled year by year based on weather conditions and the descent of the herds from the pastures. As in previous editions, we expect the parade of cows adorned with flowers, ribbons, and bells, the award ceremony for the best-decorated cow, South Tyrolean folk music, traditional culinary specialties, and games for children. We recommend checking the official Val Gardena channels to find out the final date.
The festival is held in the Vallunga (Langental), a side valley above Selva di Val Gardena / Wolkenstein in Gröden (BZ), South Tyrol, accessible on foot from the town center.
Selva di Val Gardena is located about 30 km from Bolzano, along the Val Gardena road. By car, it can be reached via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Chiusa/Val Gardena). The entrance to the Vallunga is a short distance from the town center.
The day usually begins around 10:00 AM, with the arrival of the herds in the valley in the early afternoon. Admission is free. Exact dates vary each year depending on weather conditions and the needs of the alpine pastures.
