Massarosa's spring festival celebrating animals, agriculture, and the traditions of Versilia
The Agro-Zootechnical Exhibition and Fiera del Carmine is one of the most cherished events in the calendar of Massarosa, a town in the Versilia area of the province of Lucca, Tuscany. It is the town's traditional spring festival: two days that weave together the region's agricultural and zootechnical heritage with the festive atmosphere of a popular fair, featuring animals, local products, shows, and activities for families.
The event has its roots in the ancient agricultural fairs of the Lucca plain and Versilia, tied to the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Madonna del Carmine). Over the years, the fair has evolved into a major community celebration, reaching its 39th edition in 2026. For several seasons, the event has adopted a two-day format, with the Agro-Zootechnical Exhibition taking center stage on both Saturday and Sunday, and the Fiera del Carmine concentrated on Sunday.
The heart of the exhibition is the "Great Farm", an area dedicated to animals that is swarmed by children and families every year. Highlights include:
Along Piazza Provenzali, Via C. Pellegrini, and Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, you will find the Fiera del Carmine stalls, local association booths, and areas dedicated to street food and local excellence. There is no shortage of culinary events, featuring special guests and initiatives like the competition for the best traditional Massarosa dish. The program includes music, fashion, live shows, and performances by dance schools, hosted in the amphitheater of Parco Caduti di Nassiriya.
The Agro-Zootechnical Exhibition and Fiera del Carmine is organized by the Municipality of Massarosa in collaboration with the local tourism promotion consortium and local associations. Beyond the animals and the fair, the initiative offers workshops and activities for children, moments dedicated to health and wellness, and the opening of a health village with free check-ups. It is an event that captures the rural and communal identity of this corner of Versilia.
The 2026 edition opened on Saturday, April 18, at 2:30 PM with the official inauguration, enlivened by the Pedrasamba group, the procession from the Town Hall with volunteer associations, and the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Great Farm featured the usual showcase of rabbits of all Italian breeds over two hundred meters of display, along with donkeys, calves, ponies, and geese; among the novelties, the first national gathering of "Mouton d'Ouessant" sheep. Sunday the 19th was dedicated to gastronomy with a guest chef, street food, dance school performances at Parco Caduti di Nassiriya, and the opening of the health village with free check-ups. The event concluded with a full house.
By car: Massarosa can be reached via the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway (Pisa Nord / Lucca exit) and the A12 (Versilia exit), then following signs for the town center. By train: the Massarosa-Bozzano station is on the Lucca-Viareggio-Pisa line. By plane: Pisa airport is approximately 30 km away.
The event takes place in spring in the center of Massarosa, spanning Piazza Provenzali, Via C. Pellegrini, Via Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, and Parco Caduti di Nassiriya. Admission to the fair and exhibition is free.
