The Valchiusella road race through five villages in the Canavese area
The "5 Comuni" is one of the most well-established road races in the Canavese area, organized in the municipality of Val di Chy, in the province of Turin, in the heart of the Piedmontese Valchiusella valley. As the name suggests, the route connects five local villages: Lugnacco (the start and finish point), Issiglio, Pecco, Alice Superiore, and Vistrorio. The event traditionally takes place on April 25th and has become a staple for road running enthusiasts in the Turin area.
The course measures just under 13 kilometers and features a typically hilly profile, winding through the streets and residential areas of the Valchiusella villages. The start is set in Lugnacco, in front of the multi-purpose hall, at 9:30 AM; after completing the loop that touches the other municipalities, athletes return to the starting area for the finish line.
The race is organized by the ASD Podistica Dora Baltea under the aegis of UISP and is part of the Canavese running circuit calendar. It is a competitive race open to registered athletes, featuring individual men's and women's rankings and team awards, typically attracting over two hundred participants from Piedmont and the nearby Aosta Valley.
The "5 Comuni" goes beyond just the competitive aspect: it is an opportunity to discover Valchiusella, an alpine valley in the Canavese area rich in nature, trails, and small historic villages. Running between Lugnacco, Pecco, Issiglio, Alice Superiore, and Vistrorio means traversing an authentic mountain territory, far from the main tourist routes, where the race also serves as a way to promote the local communities of the Piedmont Region.
The 25th edition of the "5 Comuni" took place on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with the start at 9:30 AM from Lugnacco, in front of the multi-purpose hall. 215 athletes set off along the approximately 13 km Valchiusella track.
In the men's category, victory went to Leonardo Ghina (Podistica Valchiusella) with a time of 46'54", ahead of Simone Girodo (Pont Saint Martin, 48'29") and Paolo Boggio (Aldo Berardo, 48'39"). Among the women, Federica Barailler (Pont Saint Martin) triumphed in 55'34", followed by Luisa Rocchia (Libertas Forno) and Elena Masili (Atletica Monterosa Fogu).
In the team rankings, Bairese, Aldo Berardo, and Libertas Forno Sergio Benetti took the top spots in that order.
Val di Chy can be reached by car from the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway (Ivrea exit), continuing towards Valchiusella; the start is in Lugnacco. By train, the reference station is Ivrea, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
Participation is reserved for registered athletes according to the rules of the Canavese UISP circuit. For registration fees and updated details, it is recommended to contact the ASD Podistica Dora Baltea.
As this is a hilly route, we recommend clothing and footwear suitable for road running with elevation changes. The meeting point and start are early in the morning: arrive in good time at the Lugnacco multi-purpose hall area.
