Yūgen: l'incanto sottile del Giappone is the exhibition that the Civic Museum of Crema and Cremasco dedicates to Japanese art and aesthetics. Set up in the Art Gallery, within the Sant'Agostino cultural centre, the exhibition guides visitors to discover a world of elegance, measure, and suggestion, in the heart of the Crema area, in the province of Cremona.

Prints, Lacquers, Kimonos, and Toys

On display is a selection of Japanese works: woodblock prints, lacquers, stencils for kimonos, decorative objects, and toys. The main collection comes from the Mazzocchi Collection of the Museum of Oriental Art in Coccaglio, supplemented by pieces from private collections and the Mnemosyne Cultural Association.

The Fascination of Yūgen

The exhibition's title refers to the Japanese concept of yūgen, described as that moment of epiphany that surprises and reveals the hidden beauty of things. It is the key to understanding a journey that also investigates how Japanese aesthetics have profoundly influenced Western artists, following a previous exhibition dedicated to the graphics of the Viennese Secession and its Nipponic inspirations.
