A winter sunrise at 2,400 metres in the Ahrntal Alps, featuring early-bird cable car rides and breakfast at the summit.
The Wintersonnenaufgang am Speikboden, or Winter Sunrise at Speikboden, is a traditional cold-season event in the Taufers Ahrntal valley, located in the municipality of Campo Tures / Sand in Taufers, in the province of Bolzano, South Tyrol (Trentino-Alto Adige). On select winter mornings, the Speikboden ski lifts open well ahead of schedule to transport guests to an altitude of 2,400 metres, allowing them to experience the sunrise over the snow-covered peaks of the Ahrntal Alps.
The Speikboden cable car, which departs first, followed by the Sonnklar chairlift, brings participants up the mountain in the early hours while it is still dark. Once at the top, you can reach the Sonnklar Cross (Sonnklarkreuz) in about ten minutes or wait for the sunrise from the panoramic tower. For those looking to venture further, it is possible to continue towards the Speikboden Cross.
After the sunrise spectacle, guests can enjoy a mountain breakfast at the local huts—including the Sonnklarhütte and Schüsslerhof—for which booking is required. Skiers can then be among the first to carve down the freshly prepared slopes before the regular lift opening at 8:30 am. Until then, the cable car, the magic carpet, and the Sonnklar chairlift remain in operation.
There is no special ticket required: standard ski passes are valid for the Winter Sunrise and can be purchased online or at the ticket office on the day of the ascent. The event takes place in Campo Tures, within the Skiworld Ahrntal area, and is organised by the Bergbahnen Speikboden lifts in collaboration with the Campo Tures Tourist Board. In case of bad weather, the event is postponed: confirmation is available by 4:00 pm the previous day at the Speikboden lift stations or the tourist office.
The 2026 winter edition of the Wintersonnenaufgang am Speikboden featured three sunrise appointments: January 2, 2026 (7:00 am), February 3, 2026 (6:30 am), and February 17, 2026 (6:15 am). On each date, the Speikboden cable car, departing early, and the Sonnklar chairlift accompanied guests up to 2,400 metres in Campo Tures (BZ) to admire the sunrise from the Sonnklar Cross or the panoramic tower. After the sunrise, breakfast was served at the mountain huts upon reservation, with the opportunity to ski on freshly prepared slopes until the regular lift opening at 8:30 am.
Each morning: cable car and Sonnklar chairlift to 2,400 m, sunrise from the Sonnklar Cross or panoramic tower, breakfast at mountain huts upon reservation (Sonnklarhütte, Schüsslerhof), first runs on freshly groomed slopes.
Speikboden is reached from the valley station of the lifts in Campo Tures / Sand in Taufers (BZ), in the Taufers Ahrntal valley. By car: take the Bressanone/Val Pusteria motorway exit, then follow signs for Brunico and Valle Aurina until you reach Campo Tures. By train: travel to Brunico (Bruneck), then take the local bus towards Campo Tures.
The sunrise ascent departs in the early morning (typically between 6:15 am and 7:00 am, depending on the date). Standard ski passes are valid; no special ticket is needed. Breakfast at the summit must be booked in advance.
Wear warm winter clothing, snow-appropriate footwear, and bring a torch. Check for event confirmation (subject to weather conditions) by 4:00 pm the day before. Information: call +39 0474 678076 or +39 0474 678122.
