A day of music, history, and nature in Pont Canavese
In the municipality of Pont Canavese, located in the Metropolitan City of Turin and in the heart of the Soana Valley, the When Music Becomes History festival was born from a simple and fascinating idea: using music as a key to tell the story of this alpine village at the foot of the Gran Paradiso National Park. Promoted by the Municipality of Pont Canavese in collaboration with local cultural organizations, the event transforms the squares, churches, and historical monuments into open-air stages for a day.
The common thread is the encounter between culture, music, and traditions, blending together to move and engage all ages. The historic center comes alive with guided tours, concerts, and performances: from the classical music of string and wind ensembles to the more popular sounds of choirs and bands, as well as traditional dances and Irish music. Alongside the musical appointments, the public can discover the village's treasures: the Church of San Francesco, the Parco delle Torri with its medieval towers, the ancient oven, and local museums opened for the occasion.
Deeply rooted in the life of the community, the event highlights the heritage of Pont Canavese and the Soana Valley, involving local associations, choral and band groups, and young local talents. The natural setting, between the mountains of Gran Paradiso and the streams that cross the town, adds a special charm to a day designed to rediscover the roots of this corner of Piedmont through its notes.
Admission is free, and the day-long format allows visitors to alternate between listening to concerts and visiting historical sites, with routes suitable even for families with children. Pont Canavese, reachable from Turin in about an hour by car driving up the Canavese valleys, is the ideal starting point for combining the event with a walk in the nature of the Soana Valley.
The 2026 edition of When Music Becomes History enlivened Pont Canavese on Sunday, May 31, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, under the direction of the Municipality and with the collaboration of the cultural entities of the Soana Valley. The program combined classical music and popular tradition, guiding the public to discover the historical sites of the village in honor of the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi.
An afternoon spread across the historic center and the village's iconic landmarks, with a program that intertwined music, history, and nature in honor of the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Throughout the afternoon, the village museums, the Parco delle Torri, and the ancient oven were open to the public.
