Three evenings of authentic Cilento flavours at Bivio di Acquavella
Welcome Summer - Flavours and Traditions is the festival that, in mid-July, officially kicks off the summer season in Bivio di Acquavella, a hamlet in the municipality of Casal Velino, in the province of Salerno (Campania). For three consecutive evenings, Piazza Santa Maria a Nives fills with tables, stalls, and music: the organizers' stated goal is to showcase the ancient flavours of Cilento through local products, recreating the atmosphere of old-fashioned village festivals.
The heart of the event is the table. The food stalls set up in the square offer dishes from the Cilento peasant kitchen—made with humble ingredients and recipes passed down through families, which have resisted standardization in the Cilento hinterland better than elsewhere. It is a deliberate choice: here, the goal is not a modern food festival formula, but the taste of village feasts from decades ago, with dishes cooked by volunteers and served outdoors.
The culinary experience is accompanied every evening by folk music, an inseparable element of Cilento festivals: tarantellas, tammurriatas, and folk repertoires accompany dinner and continue late into the night. The organizers emphasize the intergenerational nature of the event, with social moments designed «for all ages»: a community celebration rather than a show, where the audience consists largely of residents, families returning for the summer, and vacationers from the nearby coast.
The event is organized by the San Giuseppe Oratory of Bivio Acquavella, which has been the main point of reference for cultural and social initiatives in the hamlet for years. The oratory volunteers handle the setup, cooking, and hospitality: a model of self-production typical of small Cilento towns, which also explains the family-friendly and informal tone of the festival.
Bivio di Acquavella is one of the most populous hamlets of Casal Velino and is located in the hilly hinterland, a short distance from Sessa Cilento and Lustra, along the roads connecting the coast to the inland villages. It is a relatively recent settlement that grew around a road junction, yet it is situated in a territory with a thousand-year history: nearby Velia, a Greek colony and later a Roman municipality, and the ancient localities of San Giorgio and Torricelli speak to the historical depth of this corner of Cilento. The hamlet's religious life revolves around the Chapel of San Giuseppe and the Maria Mater Ecclesiae church, while the patronal feast of Maria Santissima Regina della Chiesa is celebrated in August.
Welcome Summer is part of the official Estate Casalvelinese program, which the Municipality of Casal Velino distributes every year throughout the municipal territory, from the marina to the hillside hamlets of Acquavella, Carullo, and Bivio Acquavella. In 2026, the Bivio festival took place just after the «Antichi Sapori» festival in Acquavella and before the Sweet Festival, in a July packed with events including outdoor cinema, a local products market on the promenade, and Velia Festival concerts.
From Friday, July 17th to Sunday, July 19th, 2026, Bivio di Acquavella, a hamlet of the municipality of Casal Velino, hosted three evenings of Welcome Summer - Flavours and Traditions. The stage was, as per tradition, Piazza Santa Maria a Nives, the heart of the hamlet's community life.
The initiative, promoted by the San Giuseppe Oratory of Bivio Acquavella, was born with the stated intent of showcasing the ancient flavours of Cilento with local products, recreating the atmosphere of old-fashioned village festivals: food stalls managed by volunteers, folk music, and social moments designed for all ages, from children to the hamlet's elderly.
The event was part of the official Estate Casalvelinese 2026 program presented by the Municipality, which in the same month featured the «Antichi Sapori» festival in Acquavella (July 10-12), the Magna Grecia Symphony Orchestra concert in Piazza Marinelli (July 28), and, at the end of the month, the fifth edition of the Sweet Festival.
The organizers did not release a detailed evening-by-evening program online: the names of the musical groups and precise times were not made public on accessible channels. The complete program was provided via flyers and the San Giuseppe Oratory Bivio Acquavella Facebook page.
By car: from the Cilentana highway (SS18 / SS447), take the exit for Omignano Scalo or towards Casal Velino, then follow signs for Acquavella and Bivio di Acquavella. The hamlet is located in the hilly hinterland, a few minutes from Sessa Cilento and Lustra.
By train: the most convenient stations are Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo and Omignano, on the Tyrrhenian line; from there, you must continue by car or taxi, as there are no direct evening connections to the hamlet.
Piazza Santa Maria a Nives, Bivio di Acquavella, Municipality of Casal Velino (SA). Parking is available in spaces along the hamlet's roads: on busier evenings, it is advisable to leave the car a bit further away and walk.
Access to the festival area is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls; the organizers have not published a price list online.
