Traditional 'pane cunzato' and local wine in the heart of a Sicilian village

The Warm Bread Festival, also known as the pane cunzato festival, is one of the most cherished summer events in Monforte San Giorgio, a small hillside municipality in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. The event takes place during the first week of August, coinciding with the festivities in honor of Saint George the Martyr, the town's patron saint, whose devotion dates back to the Norman era.
The heart of the festival is the freshly baked warm bread, kneaded and prepared by local women following recipes passed down through generations. The bread is seasoned in the traditional Sicilian way and offered to the public along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by local wine. It is a simple, authentic experience that showcases the rural culture and hospitality of this village in the Messina province.
The festival is more than just a culinary event: the evenings are brought to life by live Sicilian music, moments of conviviality, and the atmosphere of the patronal feast of Saint George. The celebrations culminate on the first Sunday of August with the procession of the Saint's statue through the town streets, accompanied by local brotherhoods, a marching band, and traditional showers of colorful paper.
The event is also the perfect opportunity to explore the artistic treasures of Monforte San Giorgio: the 14th-century mother church housing the patron's statue, the narrow alleys of the historic center, and the sweeping views of the valley. The festival is organized by the Saint George the Martyr Parish with the support of the Municipality of Monforte San Giorgio.
Dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; we recommend following the parish and municipal channels for updates.
