The historic singing competition of Salice Salentino, in the heart of Salento

The Salicese Song Festival is the longest-running singing event in Salice Salentino, a town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Salento region of Puglia. Established in 1965 by Maestro Cosimo Strafella and the Azione Cattolica, the festival has spanned over half a century, becoming a true collective ritual for the town and its surrounding areas.
From its inception, the event has had a clear mission: to discover and showcase young local voices. Generations of budding singers have graced the Salice stage, many of whom have gone on to pursue professional artistic careers. The format combines a singing competition for young performers with guest appearances and entertainment, creating an evening that is both a musical contest and a community celebration.
Today, the organization is managed by the Salice Musica Association, presided over by Franco Palazzo, a local musician and guitarist who has been the tireless driving force behind the event for decades. The association, active in promoting music and performance, preserves the festival's history and renews its spirit every year, maintaining the event's popular and free-to-attend nature.
The 49th edition took place on December 14, 2024, at the "Padre Benigno Perrone" Multipurpose Center, featuring fourteen young contestants. The evening included guest appearances from major television talent shows, as well as dance and comedy segments, upholding the proven format that balances competition with entertainment.
In 2026, the Salicese Song Festival reaches the symbolic milestone of its 50th edition. Registration opened in the spring of 2026 for young local talent. While the exact dates and program for the golden anniversary edition have yet to be announced, the final traditionally takes place during the Christmas season in December.
Salice Salentino, known for its DOC wines and folk traditions, is located in the hinterland between Lecce and Brindisi. The festival is one of the most cherished cultural moments in the town's calendar and is deeply rooted in the Salento region of Puglia, where music, singing, and street festivals are central to the local identity.
The 50th edition of the Salicese Song Festival marks an important milestone for the historic event in Salice Salentino. The Salice Musica Association opened registration in the spring of 2026, targeting, as always, young performers from the Salento region. At this time, the final calendar and program for the 50th anniversary edition have not yet been released; the final evening is traditionally held in December.
The Salicese Song Festival takes place in Salice Salentino (LE), Puglia. Recent editions have been held at the "Padre Benigno Perrone" Multipurpose Center.
By car: Salice Salentino can be reached via the SS7 ter and provincial roads connecting Lecce, Campi Salentina, and Guagnano. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airport is Brindisi Salento Airport.
