The national festival of quality wine and food in the village of Cesanese
Vinointorno is the food and wine festival that has brought Olevano Romano to life since 2013. Located in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the heart of the Lazio Region, the event began as a showcase for small Italian wineries. It has since grown into one of the most anticipated dates on the Lazio wine calendar, featuring hundreds of companies hand-selected by the curators of the Extrawine association through extensive cellar visits.
The formula remains faithful to the original vision: no anonymous displays, but a direct exchange between those who produce and those who taste. Behind every stand, you will almost always find the winemaker in person, ready to explain the harvest, the soil, and their cellar choices. This is what makes the experience feel more like a journey than a simple tasting.
The village hosting the festival is no random backdrop. Olevano Romano lends its name to one of the historic denominations of Lazio, the Cesanese di Olevano Romano, a red wine with a bold character grown on the hills sloping down toward the Sacco Valley. Walking through the alleys of the historic center, you will find cellars, workshops, and views that attracted German and Northern European landscape painters as early as the 19th centuryโso much so that Olevano is still known today as one of the symbolic places of landscape painting in Italy.
The event highlights this interplay between wine, art, and territory: alongside the tasting stands, there are cultural conversations, gourmet paths, and experiential itineraries that invite visitors to explore the village beyond the event square.
The selection covers the entire peninsula, from the Aosta Valley to Sicily, with a special focus on small-scale production:
The festival takes place in the evening and night hours: the stands open at 8:00 PM and remain active until 1:00 AM, when the square slowly empties. The atmosphere is that of a village festival, but with the quality level of a specialized trade fair. Piazza del Santuario della Santissima Annunziata offers ample parking nearby and is accessible to people with disabilities and their companions.
In recent years, Vinointorno has also taken on a role in tourism promotion: supported by the Lazio Region and organized with the contribution of Gourmet Errante, the event has become an opportunity to showcase the villages of the Roman hinterland and to highlight viticulture that may not have the fame of Chianti or the Langhe, but boasts a long history and unique identity. For those arriving from Rome, just over an hour away, it is a simple way to discover a part of Lazio still largely untouched by mass tourism.
For the 2026 edition, the festival doubled its appointment, proposing two weekends identical in formula and complementary in selection: Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20, followed by Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27. The heart of the event remained Piazza del Santuario della Santissima Annunziata, set up with tasting stands from the guest wineries.
The selection, curated by the Extrawine association together with Gourmet Errante and with the support of the Lazio Region, brought together traditional, organic, natural, and sparkling productions from all Italian regions, from the Aosta Valley to Sicily, with a leading role reserved for the Cesanese di Olevano Romano. Alongside the wine, food stands offered local flavors, while cultural conversations explored the link between viticulture, landscape, and tourism in the inland territories of Lazio.
The four evenings followed the same schedule.
By car from Rome: take the A1 motorway, exit at Valmontone, or take the Via Casilina/SS155 to Genazzano and then Olevano Romano; the journey takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. By train: take the FS train to the Colleferro-Segni-Paliano station on the Rome-Cassino line, then a Cotral bus to Olevano Romano. Parking is available near Piazza del Santuario della SS. Annunziata.
Food and wine stands open at 8:00 PM, Vinointorno cicchetti from 8:30 PM, closing at 1:00 AM.
Late June evenings can be cool in the hills: a light jacket is recommended. Drivers can take advantage of the reduced tasting service and the food stands. The village has B&Bs and farmhouses in the historic center and surrounding countryside, ideal for combining the festival with a visit to the Cesanese wineries.
