The patronal feast of San Rocco, San Gennaro, and Madonna dell'Arco, blending faith with the traditional 'ballata del giglio'

Every September, the town of Villaricca, in the province of Naples, comes to a standstill for its most cherished event: the Giglio Festival, the spectacular heart of the patronal celebrations. For days, the streets and alleys of the historic center are filled with crowds, illuminations, and music, as the community gathers for a ritual that weaves together religious devotion, local pride, and popular joy. It is one of the most recognizable expressions of the Campanian 'giglistica' culture, a tradition shared by towns north of Naples such as Nola, Brusciano, and Barra.
In Villaricca, the festival is dedicated to the patron saints San Rocco and San Gennaro, along with the Madonna dell'Arco, a central figure in Campanian popular piety. Celebrations include religious services in local parishes and a solemn procession through the historic center, which returned in 2025 thanks to the collaboration with the Madonna SS. dell'Arco Association. This is when the spiritual dimension of the festival shines brightest, amidst confraternities, the faithful, and musical accompaniment.
The most anticipated moment remains the ballata del giglio (the dance of the lily). The 'giglio' is a richly decorated wooden obelisk, several dozen meters high, which is lifted and carried on the shoulders of dozens of bearers: the paranza. Guided by the 'capoparanza', the bearers literally make the structure dance through the streets and alleys, following the rhythm of the band and traditional music. In Villaricca, the giglio has long been entrusted to the historic Paranza Mitica Gioventù Bruscianese, led by Angelo Mocerino, known as 'O Piscatore', whose bond with the town spans generations. The festival opens with the blessing of the giglio and continues in the following days with the dance.
The Villaricca festival is considered centennial: the 'test of the giglio' and the dance are customs deeply rooted in the town's memory and documented for decades in local chronicles. After a seven-year interruption, the event was relaunched in 2024 and returned to full swing in 2025, with a calendar expanded to include performances, cultural events, and gastronomic initiatives. The return of the giglio to the streets was welcomed by the community as the reclamation of a piece of their collective identity.
Alongside the religious aspects and the dance, the festival program has been enriched in recent years with events spread throughout the town:
Recent editions have benefited from the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples and the commitment of the municipal administration, which has focused on a program capable of blending religious tradition, culture, and the promotion of local products.
Villaricca is located about ten kilometers northwest of Naples, in the densely populated area extending toward the Agro Giuglianese. In this part of Campania, the giglio festivals are not mere shows, but true rites of identity: every community recognizes its own obelisk as a symbol of belonging, and the challenge between 'paranze' becomes a way to tell their own story. For the visitor arriving from outside, witnessing the 'ballata del giglio' in Villaricca means connecting with one of the most authentic popular traditions of the Neapolitan area, where faith, music, and the sweat of the bearers mingle under the September lights.
Official dates for the 2026 edition of the Villaricca Giglio Festival have not yet been communicated. The reference remains the usual calendar of the patronal feast, which in Villaricca falls in the month of September and revolves around the devotion to San Rocco, San Gennaro, and the Madonna dell'Arco.
In recent editions, the program has combined the religious aspect—procession through the historic center, blessing of the giglio—with the ballata del giglio carried on the shoulders of the 'paranza', and a schedule of food festivals, concerts, and shows spread throughout the town. The dates and program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Villaricca municipal administration and the organizing committees: this page will be updated as soon as they are available.
Villaricca is about 10 km northwest of Naples. By car, it can be reached via the Asse Mediano and the Circumvallazione Esterna, with exits dedicated to the towns of the Giugliano area; the town is connected to Naples and neighboring centers by bus lines. During the festival days, the historic center is largely closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in the peripheral areas and continue on foot.
Patronal celebrations traditionally take place in the month of September. In 2025, the calendar ran from September 7th to 22nd, with the blessing and the dance of the giglio in the first few days.
Processions, the 'ballata del giglio', and outdoor shows are free to attend. To follow the dance, it is advisable to arrive early along the route and respect the instructions of the security staff: the giglio is a very tall and heavy structure, and maneuvering areas must be kept clear. September evenings can be cool; a light jacket is recommended.
