Grand opera returns to the Teatro di Villa Laura in the heart of Villabate
The Villabate Opera Festival is a prestigious event that brings grand opera to the town of Villabate, in the province of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. The festival takes place in the evocative setting of the Teatro di Villa Laura on Via Giovanni Paolo II, an intimate and charming venue that welcomes opera lovers and curious newcomers alike every year.
The festival was founded in 2024 by the Corale Annamaria Pitarresi Alaimo APS, in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Villabate, with the aim of restoring a high-quality opera season to the area and making great music accessible to all. The event is deeply linked to the renowned bass-baritone Simone Alaimo, a native of Villabate, who serves as artistic director and stage director, bringing his extensive experience from the world's most important stages.
A hallmark of the Villabate Opera Festival is its focus on young performers: lead roles are often entrusted to the winners of the "Simone Alaimo – Il Bel Canto" International Competition, providing a prestigious showcase for new voices in opera. Alongside the soloists, local groups such as the Choir of the National Police Association of Palermo and the Ensemble of the Giovane Orchestra Sicula perform, in a project that combines artistic excellence with local roots.
The festival's editions have paid constant tribute to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: following "The Marriage of Figaro" in the inaugural edition, the festival continued its journey through the Da Ponte trilogy, confirming itself as a highly anticipated date in the cultural calendar of the province of Palermo. Free admission makes it a precious opportunity to discover or rediscover the charm of melodrama in an intimate and welcoming setting.
The third edition of the Villabate Opera Festival was held on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Teatro di Villa Laura in Villabate, with performances starting at 8:30 PM and free admission. On the bill was one of the greatest examples of 18th-century comic drama: "Così fan tutte" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte.
The production was directed by Simone Alaimo, bass-baritone and artistic director of the festival, with musical direction by maestro Raimondo Capizzi. The lead roles were entrusted to the winners of the "Simone Alaimo – Il Bel Canto" International Competition, accompanied by the Choir of the National Police Association of Palermo and the Ensemble of the Giovane Orchestra Sicula. The production was managed by Vinians Production and the Associazione Sinfonie.
