About Biondo d'Estate

Biondo d'Estate is the open-air summer festival of the Teatro Biondo Stabile in Palermo, which moves its performances to the evocative Cloister of the GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna "Empedocle Restivo", located within the monumental Sant'Anna complex. Under the starry sky of the historic center, the festival weaves together comedy, musical theater, revisited classics, experimental works, and new dramaturgy, pairing evening shows with staged readings dedicated to the National Prize for new dramaturgy under 40.

Theater under the stars in the heart of Palermo

Biondo d'Estate is the summer season of the Teatro Biondo Stabile in Palermo. During the warmer months, the theater leaves its historic home on Via Roma to move outdoors, into the intimate and evocative Cloister of the GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna "Empedocle Restivo", inside the monumental Sant'Anna complex. In the heart of the historic center, the gallery's courtyard transforms into an open-air stage: an intimate and refined setting where theater engages with art and the city's nocturnal atmosphere.

A multidisciplinary festival

The festival's program spans diverse genres and styles: from comedy to musical theater, from revisited classics to experimental works and contemporary performances. Alongside the evening shows, Biondo d'Estate hosts a series of staged readings performed by students of the Teatro Biondo's "School of Acting and Stage Professions," focusing on the finalist texts of the Teatro Biondo National Prize for new dramaturgy under 40. The festival thus combines the appeal of great Italian theater performers with the discovery of new voices in playwriting.

A staple of the Palermitan summer

Produced in collaboration with Civita Sicilia, the event has become a recurring fixture of the cultural summer in Palermo, the capital of Sicily. The open-air format, the setting among the halls and gardens of the Gallery of Modern Art, and the high-quality program make it one of the most appreciated theatrical offerings in the city during the month of June.

Shows and protagonists

Over the years, the festival has brought prominent names from the national theater scene and Teatro Biondo's own productions to the Cloister stage, alternating civic drama, reinterpretations of classics, concert-shows linked to the Italian and Neapolitan musical tradition, and works by young companies and students of the school. In this informal summer setting, the audience rediscovers the spirit of research and artistic quality that distinguishes the winter season of the Palermo Stabile.

How it works

Performances generally take place at 9:00 PM, while staged readings precede the evening at 7:00 PM, often paired with an aperitif in the cloister. Tickets can be purchased online via Vivaticket, at the Teatro Biondo box office on Via Roma 258, and at the GAM ticket office, which opens one hour before events. Cards and subscriptions are available for those wishing to attend multiple festival events.
