The feast of the patron saint, Saint Vigilius, in the heart of Trento
The Vigiliane Festival is the most cherished popular event in Trento, the capital of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, during the last week of June, the city pays tribute to its patron saint, Saint Vigilius, whose feast day falls on June 26th. For an entire week, the squares, alleys, and palaces of the historic center come alive with processions, performances, music, river games on the Adige, and ancient rituals rooted in the city's medieval history.
The heart of the festival is the renowned Historical Pageant, which parades through the city center with costumed performers, and the Ciusi and Gobj challenge in Piazza Fiera: a re-enactment battle involving polenta that commemorates the ancient rivalry between local districts over the possession of a cooking pot. Equally anticipated is the Tonca, a satirical and lighthearted mock trial that annually puts the year's vices and follies on public display: the condemned is symbolically dunked into the waters of the Adige River.
The Vigiliane Festival program weaves together solemn appointments and moments of pure popular fun:
The festival culminates on the day of Saint Vigilius with a solemn Pontifical Mass in the Cathedral, the procession with the patron saint's relics, the Ciusi and Gobj challenge, and finally, the spectacular Saint Vigilius fireworks that light up the sky over the Adige. Organized by the Centro Servizi Culturali Santa Chiara in collaboration with the Municipality of Trento and the Pro Loco Centro Storico Trento for the historical re-enactment, the Vigiliane Festival has been a defining identity event for the city and the entire Trentino region for over forty years.
The 2026 edition of the Vigiliane Festival took place in Trento from June 19 to 26. The Historical Pageant, curated by the Pro Loco Centro Storico Trento under the artistic direction of Chiara Defant, featured a completely renewed route inspired by the theme of the Seven Deadly Sins, with street entertainment throughout the center starting on the afternoon of June 19.
Highlights included: the Tribunal of Penance and the Tonca, the Magica Notte on June 20, the Palio dell'Oca on the waters of the Adige on June 21, the Vigiliane Folk dance program in Piazza Mostra, and the Vigiliane Kids family activities. On June 26, the patron saint's day, the festival concluded with the Ciusi and Gobj challenge in Piazza Fiera and the traditional Saint Vigilius fireworks. The edition also paid tribute to the 225th anniversary of the Banda Città di Trento.
Trento is easily accessible by train along the Brenner line (Trento station, a few minutes' walk from the historic center) and by car via the A22 Brenner motorway (exit Trento Centro or Trento Sud). Events take place in the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized: we recommend using the designated parking lots and public transport.
Most Vigiliane Festival events take place in public squares and are free of charge. The detailed program with times and locations is published on the official website festevigiliane.it. Main squares: Piazza Duomo, Piazza Fiera, Piazza Mostra.
