The Good Friday procession with the Maria Santissima Addolorata Hooded Group
As evening falls on Good Friday, the historic center of Torre del Greco clears of traffic and fills with silence. This is the moment of the Via Matris, the procession of the Maria Santissima Addolorata Hooded Group: a prayerful journey that retraces not only the Passion of Christ but, above all, the sorrow of his Mother, according to the Marian devotion from which the rite takes its name. In a city in the province of Naples, known worldwide for its coral craftsmanship and the looming presence of Mount Vesuvius, this is perhaps the most solemn and intimate evening of the entire year.
The procession begins at the Church of Santa Maria del Pianto on Via Purgatorio, in the ancient heart of the city. The solemn emergence of the statue of Maria Santissima Addolorata opens the procession: behind her, the hooded participants walk with covered faces, carrying the symbols of the Passion of Christ, flanked by children in hoods and the confraternity sisters. The pace is slow, marked by prayer and the lights of the procession; there is no festive music, no market stalls: the Via Matris is a rite, not a spectacle.
The most intense moment of the evening occurs at Piazzale dell'Annunciazione, where Our Lady of Sorrows meets the Christ emerging from the Santissima Annunziata Parish. It is the image that all of Torre del Greco awaits: the Mother and Son reunited in the night before a silent crowd. From there, the procession continues toward the Santa Maria del Carmine Parish, where it concludes with the traditional and devotional Kiss of the Foot of Our Lady of Sorrows.
The Via Matris of Torre del Greco does not have roots in distant centuries: it was born in 2013 through the initiative of a group of devotees from the historic center, and in just over a decade, it has become one of the defining events of the city's Holy Week. The organization is managed by the Maria Santissima Addolorata Hooded Group in collaboration with the Santa Maria del Carmine Parish and the Santissima Annunziata Parish.
The Via Matris is not the only rite of the evening. Simultaneously, the Via Crucis in the Porto district and the one in the Cento Fontane area take place: different routes that, at the same moment, cross different neighborhoods of the city in an ideal embrace of celebrations. In recent years, the hooded procession has also been followed via live stream on the social media channels of the local news outlet VesuvioLive, which broadcasts the images alongside those of the other local rites.
Those who arrive for the Via Matris will find a city in Campania that deserves more than just one evening: the artisanal coral and cameo workshops, the Vesuvian villas of the Golden Mile, the seafront, and access to the Vesuvius National Park. Holy Week, with its processions and silences, remains, however, the moment when the local identity of Torre del Greco reveals itself most authentically.
The 2026 edition of the Via Matris took place on Friday, April 3, 2026, departing at 8:00 PM. As per tradition, the procession emerged from the Church of Santa Maria del Pianto in the Via Purgatorio district, with the solemn exit of the statue of Maria Santissima Addolorata.
Behind the statue, the Hooded Penitents marched with the symbols of the Passion of Christ, flanked by children in hoods and the confraternity sisters. The central moment was the meeting with Christ at Piazzale dell'Annunciazione, in front of the Santissima Annunziata Parish, before returning to the Santa Maria del Carmine Parish for the Kiss of the Foot of Our Lady of Sorrows.
On the same evening, the Via Crucis of the Porto district and the one in the Cento Fontane area also took place, in an ideal embrace between the rites of the city's different neighborhoods. For the fourth consecutive year, the procession was broadcast live on the social media channels of VesuvioLive.
