The Veglie Carnival

The Veglie Carnival is the masquerade event that colors the streets and squares of Veglie every winter—a town of just over four thousand inhabitants in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. It is a deeply popular festival, built year after year by local associations, schools, and the municipal administration, involving the entire town in an atmosphere of contagious joy.

The Masked Parade

The heart of the event is the parade of masked groups and allegorical floats that winds through the town center to converge on Piazza Umberto I, the main square. Alongside organized groups, which grow in costume and choreography quality each year, individual masks also take part: children, families, and enthusiasts wearing handmade costumes. Participation is open and free, with registration required in the preceding weeks.

Music, Entertainment, and Prizes

During the festival days, there is no shortage of live music and DJ sets, entertainment for children, shows, and stalls selling traditional carnival sweets. A jury awards prizes to the most beautiful and original groups, floats, and masks, with an awards ceremony closing the event. Over the years, the quality of the allegorical floats has steadily improved, thanks to the voluntary work of local committees and associations.

A Salento Tradition

The Veglie Carnival is part of the rich carnival tradition of Salento and the province of Lecce, where every town celebrates this period with parades, masks, and popular rituals. In Veglie, the festival maintains an authentic, small-town dimension, designed primarily for families and children, yet capable of attracting visitors from neighboring areas. It is a chance to discover a genuine corner of inland Salento, away from the more touristy coastal spots, and to experience a community that gathers around its traditions.

When It Takes Place

The event is traditionally held during the Carnival period, between late February and early March, with multiple events distributed between the schools and the square, culminating in a grand finale. Dates and the program for each edition are announced by the organizers and on the official Veglie Carnival Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the event.
