Three days of festivities around Saint Clare in the smallest hamlet of Casal Velino
The Vallo Scalo Summer Festival is the annual mid-August event that brings together the smallest hamlet of the Municipality of Casal Velino, in the province of Salerno, in the heart of the Cilento Campania region. A few hundred residents—the hamlet has about 228 inhabitants—transform the streets around the church into a shared space for three days, featuring religious celebrations, music, and outdoor dining.
It is not a large festival, and that is precisely its charm. Here, you can experience the most authentic side of a Cilento village feast: where the local committee, families, and the parish build the program together, and where visitors are welcomed without pretense, sitting at the same table as the neighbors.
The festival is dedicated to Saint Clare of Assisi, the patron saint of the hamlet, whose feast day falls on August 11th. The church of Vallo Scalo, located in the Pantana district, is named after her and was restored to its former glory following a major renovation completed in 2023. The entire calendar of festivities is built around this date, extending to the eve and the day after.
As in many Cilento communities, the religious aspect remains the most deeply felt moment of identity, while the evenings are dedicated to entertainment, music, and local gastronomy. It is a tradition that is constantly renewed: the small community dedicates these festivities to its patron saint every August 11th.
The official Estate Casalvelinese 2026 program, presented by the Municipality of Casal Velino, places the Vallo Scalo festivities from August 10th to 12th, 2026. The dates have been confirmed by the municipal administration, while the details of the evenings—artists, times, and food stalls—have not yet been released.
This is common practice for hamlet festivals: the program is announced locally just a few days in advance, via posters displayed in the village and announcements on the organizing committee's social media channels. Those wishing to attend should check for updates in the days immediately preceding the event.
The village of Vallo Scalo developed around the Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station, opened in 1887 on the Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria line and located within the municipal territory of Casal Velino. The station serves a wide area, including Casal Velino, Vallo della Lucania, and Castelnuovo Cilento, and is now one of the most important transport hubs in the Cilento area, with steadily growing passenger traffic.
This location, equidistant from the sea and the mountains, makes Vallo Scalo a convenient base for exploring the Cilento National Park: from here, you can reach Vallo della Lucania in a few minutes, and the beaches of Casal Velino Marina and the archaeological site of Velia in just over fifteen minutes.
The Vallo Scalo festivities are part of a particularly busy municipal calendar, distributed between the coast and the hilly hamlets of Acquavella, Carullo, and Bivio Acquavella. During the same period, in other parts of the Casal Velino territory, the 2026 program offers:
Immediately after Ferragosto, the season continues with the festivities for the Immaculate Madonna in Carullo (August 17th-19th) and the Acquavella End-of-Summer Festival (August 19th-21st): those who choose Vallo Scalo as a base can enjoy a full holiday of festivals without leaving the municipality.
The official calendar of the Estate Casalvelinese 2026 indicates the Vallo Scalo festivities from August 10th to 12th, spanning the feast day of the patron saint, Saint Clare of Assisi, which falls on August 11th. The festival takes place around the hamlet's church, in the Pantana district, and involves the entire village.
During the same period, the Municipality of Casal Velino offers other events in other locations in the area: the Frank Tito Swingtet concert on August 10th, the Gli Angeli Cantano show in Piazza Marconi on August 11th, and the Orchestra Partenopea on August 12th. Those staying in the area can therefore alternate between the village festival and coastal events.
At the moment, the details of the Vallo Scalo evenings are not available online. This is the norm for Cilento hamlet festivals, whose programs are made known a few days before with posters displayed in the village and announcements on the organizing committee's social media channels.
By train: The Vallo della Lucania-Castelnuovo station, on the Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria line, is located in the hamlet of Vallo Scalo itself and is served by regional connections and some long-distance trains. It is by far the most convenient option.
By car: Take the Battipaglia exit on the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, then follow the SS18 south and take the turnoff for Vallo della Lucania. From Salerno, the journey takes about an hour and a half.
By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi or Naples Capodichino airport, then continue by train or rental car.
As with almost all Cilento hamlet festivals, access to the festival area is free. Only food and drinks purchased at the stalls managed by the committee are subject to payment.
The hamlet offers few facilities: accommodation is concentrated in Casal Velino Marina, Ascea Marina, and Vallo della Lucania, all reachable in a few minutes. Booking in advance is essential during the high season.
