The valley's traveling carnival, featuring floats, masquerades, and gourmet stops
In the heart of the Canavese mountains, in the Province of Turin, the Valle Soana Carnival is one of the most beloved and anticipated events for the communities of this alpine valley. Affectionately called Carlevà dla Val Soana in the local dialect, this carnival does not take place in a single square; instead, it travels through the entire valley, involving the municipalities of Ronco Canavese, Ingria, and Valprato Soana along with their hamlets.
The unique feature of this festival is its traveling nature: the float parade follows the classic route that climbs from the Forzo valley up to Valprato Soana, with gourmet stops scattered along the way. It is a formula that turns the entire valley into an open-air stage, where every village welcomes the procession with food, wine, and warm hospitality.
The Carnival attracts a good number of floats and many costumed participants, with creations ranging from medieval themes to more contemporary and imaginative designs. The parade includes groups arriving from the Canavese plains and the nearby Aosta Valley, particularly from Cogne, confirming the event's appeal far beyond the valley's borders. A jury awards prizes to the most beautiful floats, and the prize-giving ceremony concludes the day in Valprato Soana.
The culinary aspect is an integral part of the festival: from the Saturday night dinner organized by the Ronco Canavese Pro Loco to the Sunday lunch featuring beans and pork rinds, as well as the delicious stops along the route organized by local associations and businesses. It is a perfect opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of the Valle Soana.
Organized by the Pro Loco associations of Ronco Canavese and Valprato Soana, the Valle Soana Carnival is much more than just an event: it is a moment when the entire valley community comes together, with singing and dancing that continues until nightfall, involving both young and old in a joyful and genuine atmosphere.
The Valle Soana can be reached by car from the Canavese area by passing through Pont Canavese and following the provincial road towards Ronco Canavese and Valprato Soana. The festival is itinerant: on Saturday, it takes place in Ronco Canavese (at the Piazza Mistral multipurpose hall), while on Sunday, the parade travels through the Forzo valley to Valprato Soana.
The Carnival typically takes place on a weekend in March. It is advisable to check the dates on the official valley website before traveling.
