About Valle delle Orchidee

The Valle delle Orchidee Festival is the most anticipated nature event in Sassano, in the province of Salerno, located in the heart of the Vallo di Diano. Between late May and early June, the town celebrates the 47 kmยฒ of the Valle delle Orchidee, a protected area within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, where 184 species of wild orchids have been cataloged. Guided hikes, kite flying, children's workshops, folk music, and local Vallo di Diano cuisine bring three days of free events to life, spanning the mountains, the municipal park, and the historic town squares.

A festival born from wild orchids

In Sassano, a small town in the province of Salerno overlooking the Vallo di Diano, spring has a specific name: Valle delle Orchidee (Orchid Valley). This area of approximately 47 kmยฒ is part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, where botanists have identified 184 types of wild orchidsโ€”68 different species and 57 subspeciesโ€”a concentration that makes it one of the most precious botanical ecosystems in the entire Mediterranean basin. This wealth inspired the Valle delle Orchidee Festival, which celebrated its 25th edition in 2025.

The event is more than just a local fair: it is a long-term environmental enhancement project carried out by the Municipality of Sassano, with the patronage of the Park Authority and the Campania Region, aimed at showcasing a natural heritage that blooms for only a few weeks a year and deserves to be visited with respect.

Three days between the mountains and the historic center

The proven format spreads the festival across three complementary locations. The "Paolo Borsellino" Municipal Park hosts the opening evening, featuring round tables dedicated to landscape and sustainability where scholars, botanists, and local administrators exchange ideas. The main day shifts to higher altitudes, in the valley itself, where activities begin early in the morning. The closing event returns to town, in Piazza Umberto I, with music and tastings among the alleys of the historic center.

  • Guided hikes along the blooming trails, accompanied by experts
  • Trekking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and off-road trails
  • Creative workshops for children, inflatables, and play areas
  • Visits to the Valle delle Orchidee Ecomuseum
  • Live music and evening shows

Kites, the symbol of the event

The most recognizable image of the festival is the kites, which have become the visual signature of the event over the years. In the 2025 edition, the chosen theme was peace: children created their own kites during a mountain workshop, decorating them with the colors of peace and writing messages or symbols on them, before flying them all together over the valley. In the evening, the flight is repeated in a night version, with illuminated kites and flags standing out against the sky of the Vallo di Diano.

The flavors of the Vallo di Diano

Alongside the nature-focused activities, the festival gives ample space to Vallo di Diano cuisine, prepared on-site and served at stands set up both in the mountains and in town. The signature product is the zeppola sassanese, the specialty that has always accompanied the festival days; alongside it are traditional local peasant dishes and gastronomic offerings curated by local associations.

Why it's worth the trip

The Valle delle Orchidee Festival is one of the best opportunities to discover the hinterland of Campania away from the coast: a landscape of mountains, sinkholes, and limestone meadows that lights up with rare blooms in late spring. The event is designed for all ages, with a slow pace suitable for families, and has always maintained free admission to all scheduled activities. Visitors to Sassano can easily combine their trip with visits to other centers in the Vallo di Diano, from the Certosa di Padula to the villages overlooking the plain.

A year-round commitment

The valley doesn't only come alive during the festival: throughout the spring, guided hikes and walks are organized along the orchid trails, while the Pro Loco and local associations offer trekking and environmental education initiatives. Those unable to attend the main event can still plan a visit during the blooming season, generally between April and June.

Valle delle Orchidee โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Valle delle Orchidee Festival has not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Sassano. The event usually takes place between late May and early June, during the blooming period of the valley's wild orchids. While awaiting the final calendar, the Pro Loco still offers guided walks along the Valle delle Orchidee trails. It is recommended to check dates and the program on the Municipality's official channels before traveling.

2026 Edition: dates not yet official

At the moment, no official communication from the Municipality of Sassano regarding the dates of the 2026 Valle delle Orchidee Festival has been published. The last documented edition was the 25th, held from May 31 to June 2, 2025.

The reference period remains that of the wild orchid blooming, which in the valley is concentrated between spring and early summer: it is therefore plausible that the event will also take place between late May and early June in 2026, but until the Municipality's announcement, the date indicated on this page is purely indicative.

What we know so far

  • No official program published for 2026
  • Guided hikes in the Valle delle Orchidee promoted by the Sassano Pro Loco have been announced, which are initiatives separate from the main festival
  • The valley remains accessible throughout the blooming season
