About Valfino al Canto

Every August, Arsita—a village in the province of Teramo overlooking the Fino valley at the foot of the Gran Sasso—hosts Valfino al Canto. This long-running ethnomusicological festival was named by The Guardian as one of the twenty best folk music festivals in Europe. For three days, with no stages or amplification, around thirty groups from Abruzzo, Italy, and beyond transform the squares and alleys into a living laboratory of sounds, songs, and dances. Simultaneously, the town celebrates the Coatto Festival, featuring an ancient pastoral dish that blends music and local flavor.

Valfino al Canto: Traditional music in the heart of Abruzzo

Valfino al Canto is the traditional music festival that brings Arsita to life every summer. This small town in the Province of Teramo, Abruzzo, is perched on a hill overlooking the Fino valley, beneath Monte Camicia on the eastern side of the Gran Sasso massif. Founded in 1995, the event is now one of the longest-running and most respected ethnomusicological gatherings in Italy, earning a spot on The Guardian's list of the twenty best folk music festivals in Europe.

A festival without stages or amplification

The formula for Valfino al Canto is unique: no stages, no amplification. The music is born and spreads directly through the streets and squares of the village, where, starting in the afternoon, wandering musicians create winding, diverse processions and spontaneous workshops of sound and dance. Every year, the festival hosts about thirty musical groups from Abruzzo, various Italian regions, and abroad, with repertoires ranging from Greek and Balkan traditions to South American, Scottish, and Romani styles, not to mention the folk and pastoral music of inland Abruzzo.

The procession of Santa Flurijì

The festival is symbolically opened by the whimsical procession of Santa Flurijì, whose name means "to bloom" in the local dialect. This saint is not part of the canonical hagiography but rather a product of the organizers' imagination; over the years, she has been adopted as the patron saint of the event, the musicians, and all things that bloom. The procession kicks off three days of concerts, dances, music and dance workshops, jam sessions, and storytelling.

The Coatto Festival

Running concurrently with the festival is the Coatto Festival, dedicated to an ancient pastoral dish of the local cuisine. Coatto is a slow-cooked mutton stew; the name comes from the Latin coactus (reduced), and the recipe calls for onion, garlic, rosemary, sage, marjoram, olive oil, and a splash of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo wine. Food and wine stands, including vegan options, open every evening to accompany the music in a convivial atmosphere.

A welcoming village

Organized by the Altofino Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Arsita and the local Pro Loco, the event provides a large, free camping area with restrooms, just a short walk from the heart of the festivities. Admission to all events is free: an open invitation to families, folk music enthusiasts, and travelers curious to discover the most authentic soul of inland Abruzzo.
