The Antrona Valley skyrace, winding through the Ossola peaks with views of Monte Rosa
The Val Brevettola Skyrace is one of the most beloved skyrunning events in the Ossola region, set in the heart of the Antrona Valleyโone of the most authentic and hidden alpine valleys in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area. Every summer, the small village of Montescheno comes alive to welcome athletes and enthusiasts who take on a technical and spectacular course, suspended between alpine pastures, high-altitude passes, and panoramas stretching all the way to Monte Rosa.
The race covers 20.6 km with 1,860 meters of positive elevation gain, starting and finishing in Piazza Enrico Minacci in Montescheno (702 m). The route retraces the ancient processional path of the "Lautani d'i set frei": it climbs through the village hamlets up to Alpe Ogaggia (1,977 m), descends towards Alpe Campo and Alpe Vauzone, and then tackles the second climb leading to Passo di Arnigo (2,000 m), the highest point of the race. The route continues along the Bognanco Valley before the long final descent to the finish line.
The event was founded in 2016 in memory of two young men from the Antrona Valley who passed away prematurely. The spirit of friendship, sharing, and love for the mountains remains the hallmark of the event, organized by ASD Val Brevettola with the support of many local volunteers. The race is part of the VCO Top Race circuit, which brings together the most important mountain running competitions in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola area.
Alongside the main race, the festival day includes a children's race and a convivial lunch prepared by the chefs of Formont in Villadossola, moments that make the Val Brevettola Skyrace a true village festival as well as a high-level sporting appointment. While demanding, the course alternates technical sections with more flowing stretches, making it accessible even to well-trained non-professional athletes.
The Val Brevettola Skyrace 2026 returns to Montescheno on Sunday, July 26, 2026, with start and finish at Piazza Enrico Minacci. The race confirms the 20.6 km and 1,860 m positive elevation gain course through the alpine pastures of the Antrona Valley, up to Passo di Arnigo (2,000 m). Registration, limited to 230 athletes, is managed online via WeDoSport with a fee of 35 euros.
Four refreshment points are planned along the route (Alpe Pianzaccia, Alpe Ogaggia, Passo di Arnigo, Passo Saudรจra) and two mandatory time gates: Alpe Ogaggia (2h30') and Alpe Pianino (5h).
Montescheno can be reached by car via the A26 motorway (Villadossola exit), then driving up the Antrona Valley. By train, the reference station is Villadossola, on the Domodossola-Novara line, from where you can continue by car to the village.
Online registration via the WeDoSport platform or at Bar Sport in Villadossola (requires a competitive medical certificate). Participation fee: 35 euros, including race bib, technical shirt, products, meal voucher, and prizes. Maximum number of participants: 230 athletes.
As this is a high-altitude race in semi-autonomy, technical trail running gear is required; a mobile phone and emergency whistle are recommended. A technical briefing is mandatory on Saturday afternoon in Montescheno.
