About UNICA – Holy Week

UNICA is a project by the Pro Loco Porta del Salento dedicated to showcasing the Holy Week traditions of San Vito dei Normanni, in the province of Brindisi. Between Good Friday and Holy Saturday, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Vittoria becomes the stage for rites passed down for over two centuries: La Desolata, La Chiamata, the Procession of the Mysteries, the Burial, and La Gloria. This intersection of faith, music, and memory defines the deep identity of the local community and is now part of the official regional calendar of Holy Weeks in Puglia.

A Holy Week that becomes "UNICA"

In San Vito dei Normanni, in the province of Brindisi, Easter is more than just a religious holiday: it is the moment the entire community reconnects with its most ancient rites. Through the UNICA – Holy Week in San Vito dei Normanni project, the Pro Loco Porta del Salento has given a unified identity to these celebrations, sharing their uniqueness beyond local borders. This is not a manufactured event, but a celebration of traditions that have been handed down for at least two centuries.

The heart of the rites: the Basilica of Santa Maria della Vittoria

The focal point of the celebrations is the mother church, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Vittoria, alongside the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà — known as "the Golgotha" — and the Church of San Giovanni, the "Cenacle of Hopes". Within these sacred spaces, over the course of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, the community gathers for deeply moving moments dedicated to the burial of Christ and the sorrow of the Virgin Mary.

The moments that make the San Vito Easter unique

  • La Desolata: a meditation on the role of Mary at the foot of the cross, accompanied by music composed by local musician Antonio Pecoraro.
  • La Chiamata: a highly symbolic moment where the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows moves through the church among the faithful to gather the body of her Son.
  • The Procession of the Mysteries: a solemn procession involving all local confraternities along the ancient perimeter of the town walls, symbolizing an embrace of the entire community.
  • The Burial: one of the most distinctive features of the local tradition, where the statue of the dead Jesus is wrapped in a sheet and laid on the High Altar as the lights slowly dim.
  • La Gloria: on the night of Holy Saturday, during the Easter Vigil, the veil covering the Risen Christ falls to the sound of the organ and the "trènala", a traditional wooden instrument that symbolizes rebirth.

A tradition that belongs to Puglia

Included in the regional calendar of Holy Weeks in Puglia, the Easter celebrations in San Vito stand alongside the region's most significant traditions. San Vito dei Normanni offers not the bright lights of more spectacular rites, but an intimate and deeply communal intensity, where faith, memory, and music intertwine to tell the soul of this town in the Salento area of Brindisi.

UNICA – Holy Week — edition 2026

For the 2026 Holy Week, celebrated between Good Friday, April 3, and Holy Saturday, April 4, San Vito dei Normanni observed its secular rites under the UNICA project by the Pro Loco Porta del Salento. The Basilica of Santa Maria della Vittoria hosted La Desolata, La Chiamata, the Procession of the Mysteries, the Burial, and, on the night of the Easter Vigil, La Gloria.

The 2026 edition of the San Vito Holy Week focused on the two central days of the Easter Triduum: Good Friday, April 3, and Holy Saturday, April 4. It was the first celebration to officially bear the name of the UNICA project, through which the Pro Loco Porta del Salento aimed to share the uniqueness of these rites beyond municipal borders.

In the Basilica of Santa Maria della Vittoria, following the Good Friday liturgies, the rites of La Desolata — featuring music by Antonio Pecoraro —, La Chiamata, and the Procession of the Mysteries along the ancient walls took place, with the participation of all local confraternities. The Burial saw the statue of the dead Jesus laid on the High Altar as the lights slowly dimmed. On the night of Holy Saturday, La Gloria concluded the rites with the falling of the veil over the Risen Christ, accompanied by the organ and the "trènala".
