A living Stations of the Cross in Gallo-Italic dialect through the alleys of Buccheri
In Buccheri, a small town in the province of Syracuse perched on the Iblei mountains, Good Friday is more than just a religious observance: it is the day of U Passiu Santu, the living Passion of Christ that has united the entire community for over forty years. Born in the early 1980s, this sacred performance is today one of the most deeply felt and identity-defining expressions of Holy Week in the Syracuse area.
What makes U Passiu Santu truly unique is the language: the texts are recited in a rare Gallo-Italic dialect, a descendant of the northern tongues brought to Sicily centuries ago, composed in strict rhyme by the pen of Salvatore Terzo. Because of this linguistic peculiarity, the event has been included in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Sicily - Book of Expressions - Gallo-Italic Alloglottal Speech, established by the Sicilian Region.
The performance begins at Piazza Loreto and winds through the historic center of Buccheri, where narrow streets, stone alleys, and ancient architecture become a natural stage. The procession, featuring over a hundred extras and costumed actors, unfolds amidst light effects and specially composed music, eventually reaching the reconstruction of Mount Calvary, where the crucifixion is staged. The traditional sound of the 'troccola', the ancient wooden instrument of Holy Week, marks the most intense moments.
Costumes, sets, and organization are the result of the voluntary work of residents, gathered in the U Passiu Santu Association. The event is sponsored by the Municipality of Buccheri and represents a moment of strong cohesion for the Iblei village, capable of attracting visitors from across the province of Syracuse and all of Sicily. For those visiting the region during Easter, it is a rare opportunity to witness an authentic folk tradition, far from mass tourism circuits.
Nestled among the villages of south-eastern Sicily, Buccheri is one of the highest towns in the province of Syracuse and guards a heritage of nature, gastronomy, and traditions. Attending U Passiu Santu also means discovering this corner of the Iblei, its churches, and its cuisine, during one of the most evocative moments of the year.
The 42nd edition of U Passiu Santu took place on Friday, April 3, 2026, Good Friday, starting at 9 PM. The performance began at Piazza Loreto and crossed the historic center of Buccheri, accompanied by light effects and evocative music, leading to the reconstruction of Mount Calvary where the crucifixion was staged.
The rhyming texts, written by Salvatore Terzo, were recited by over a hundred extras and costumed actors in the village's rare Gallo-Italic dialect, recognized as intangible heritage by the Sicilian Region. Admission to the event was free.
