The savory pie of the peasant cuisine of Val Nervia, in the perched village of Castel Vittorio
The turtun is a savory pie typical of the peasant cuisine of Val Nervia, filled with vegetables and cheese. It originates from the humble traditions of the Ligurian mountains, when women skillfully combined a few ingredients to create tasty dishes. One detail well illustrates the community dimension of this preparation: before baking the turtun in shared wood-fired ovens, each family would mark it with their initials to identify it.
The festival takes place in Castel Vittorio, a perched village in the upper Val Nervia in the province of Imperia, a few kilometers from Pigna and the famous Dolceacqua. The narrow streets and alleys of the historic center provide the backdrop for a festival that is both a gastronomic event and an opportunity to rediscover the mountain culture of western Liguria.
During the event, you can taste freshly baked turtun, accompanied by music, dancing, and stalls. Among the innovations of recent editions, a gastronomic competition awards the best turtun, evaluating its shape, color, flavor, aroma, texture, and the characteristic folds of the pastry. The Turtun Festival is part of the Authentic Ligurian Events promoted by the Liguria Region.
The 2026 edition of the Turtun Festival is scheduled for August 2nd, as part of the calendar of Authentic Ligurian Events. In the perched village of Castel Vittorio, in the upper Imperia Val Nervia, the festival dedicated to the typical savory pie with vegetables and cheese is renewed, with tastings, musical entertainment, and the competition to judge the best turtun.
Detailed hourly program details will be released by the organizers in the days preceding the festival.
Castel Vittorio can be reached by car from the Ventimiglia or Bordighera highway exit (A10), driving up the Val Nervia beyond Dolceacqua and Pigna. The scenic valley roads, amidst olive groves and vineyards, are part of the experience. It is not served by a train station.
Free admission; tastings available for purchase at the stands. The festival usually takes place in the evening. The village streets are narrow: it is advisable to park at the entrance of the town.
