Truciolinarte: National Flower Festival

The national gathering of floral art groups

The National Flower Festival in Torricella Sicura, a small town in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo, is the summer event where the Truciolinarte Artistic Flower Festival Association opens its village to floral art groups from all over Italy. Unlike the Corpus Domini Flower Festival, which renews a local religious and community rite every June, this event has a declared national vocation: it is a gathering that brings together masters and floral art associations from different regions for a weekend of sharing, ephemeral art, and technical exchange along the streets of the historic center.

The secret of fir wood shavings

The great peculiarity of the Torricella floral art is that, instead of flower petals, they use dust-free white fir wood shavings colored with water-based tempera. This choice stems from a deep bond with the territory: Torricella Sicura is among the municipalities closest to the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, and Truciolinarte wanted a sustainable material capable of creating large paintings without depleting the surrounding nature. The sketches are drawn by hand and then filled in frame by frame, in a patient process involving dozens of volunteers.

A village that becomes an open-air gallery

During the weekend of the National Flower Festival, the main street of the village of Torricella Sicura transforms into a long open-air art gallery, with carpets and paintings composed by various guest groups alongside those of the local masters. The exchange between Italian floral art schools—each with its own tradition, materials, and styles—makes the event a precious opportunity to admire, in one place, the richness of a popular art form spread throughout the peninsula.

Art, community, and territory

As with other Truciolinarte initiatives, the National Flower Festival is a participatory project that sees families, young people, the elderly, and local associations working side by side, united by the goal of "awakening and safeguarding" the artistic spirit of the Teramo village. Over the years, the floral art activity has been joined by murals and installations that have enriched the permanent artistic heritage of the town, making Torricella Sicura a small Abruzzo landmark for ephemeral and community art.

When and where

The National Flower Festival takes place in the historic center of Torricella Sicura, in the province of Teramo, in July. The main street of the village becomes pedestrianized for the occasion and the works are freely visitable outdoors. The event is part of the municipality's summer calendar, distinct from and complementary to the Corpus Domini Flower Festival in June.
